5.0 out of 5 stars He's Back!
The question is, with his talent, why does he stay away so long? This is an incredible cd. He has just about everyone who is anyone participating on this one. His interpretation of "All That I Can Say" with Christopher Williams on vocals is brilliant. Angie stone delivers on "Won't Be A Fool." The title song, "As Promised" featuring...

1.0 out of 5 stars Long awaited....and disappointed
The first time I heard Alex Bugnon was in the fall of 1996. He played at an outside concert that my ex boss hired for all his employess to enjoy. Alex was fabulous! I went out and purchased everything I could find. I have waited a long time for this new release only to be very disappointed. Very bland. So bland , that I sold it to a used CD store for $2.50.

His interpretation of "All That I Can Say" with Christopher Williams on vocals is brilliant. Angie stone delivers on "Won't Be A Fool." The title song, "As Promised" featuring Gerald Albright on saxophone reinforces why Alex Bugnon continues to be my favorite jazz instrumentalist. Finally, Naima by John Coltrane will absolutely take your breath away. I promise this is a cd that will not disappoint you. ...As Promised. You'll be sorry if you don't buy this one! I expect to hear this all over radio very shortly.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm sure he could hang, July 15, 2003
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
Alex is a smooth jazz guy, but even though, you can tell by the way he plays that he could hang tough with some real jazz pianists. This guys stuff really grooves. I listen to cats like herbie, mulgrew miller, and danilo perez, but I would buy this man's stuff along with Joe sample.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Put Together, August 24, 2003

"mkwill1" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
This album is not just smooth, but has a bit of a hard edge to it which I like. Alex B. does show that he can get his groove on, in this genre, with the rest of a star studied array of artists on this album - Gerald albright, Victor Bailey, Poogie Bell (drummer extraordinare!), Branford Marsalis, not to mention Angie Stone, Lala Hathaway, Christopher Williams - Mr Bubnon really couldn't really go wrong...

From what I've heard, this is his best album to date and doesn't pretend to be anything else than the smooth jazz that it is - although I reckon that it's just a little more soulful and that the musicians are showing more of what they can do on this album than your regular "smooth jazz album".
A good album to have.

One thing I'd say on the smooth jazz argument - I just wish people would just stop comparing smooth jazz artists with contemporary/straight ahead jazz artists. There are similarities, but I'm sure that they don't want to be compared with each other! They are different genres, one never claims to be the other, with the only similarities being the instruments played!

Oh, and that main review (above) by Larry Nai, JAZZIZ Magazine - Angie Stone had the "sweet scatting" vocals on "Won't Be a Fool" .........Also Herbie H. took the flack for changing from straight ahead jazz to jazz fusion, smooth jazz artists are taking the flack for having the word "jazz" as the description of the music they play!! Buy it of you like it, leave it if you don't.

Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why all the negativity???, July 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Alex Bugnon since 1991. I love his music. I have to admit that "As Promised" is my favorite by him. I believe that you would have to have a passion for smooth jazz in order to understand where Alex is coming from on this release. This CD has a laid back feel to it that wouldn't appeal to those who desire intensity for their listening pleasure. I think the CD could have done without track number 1, but other than that I enjoyed the entire CD. Alex's music has sophistication and style. He's original, even in some of the remakes. You know an Alex Bugnon track when you hear it. I truly love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good On His Promise, March 13, 2000

I just bought the CD yesterday, and I've probably listened to it 10 times already! I especially like "All That I Can Say" (where has Christopher Williams been these past few years? ) The song with Angie Stone is nice too. Hope Alex goes on tour soon--he's even better live!

This Album is smoking. The album is full of rich mature sound bits. Probably his best album to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars You almost scared me!, May 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
The earlier posted bad review almost scared me. I have all the previous releases and they are right. I heard him live that that was right. But the bad customer review created doubt. "Maybe it was so long coming for a reason"..."Maybe Alex is slipping". "I have the history...give it the benefit of the doubt". Result: That person was tripping. The sound is still there...brilliant. Absolutely love it. The FUNKY FRENCHMAN has done it again (yes I know he is not from France but French is his native language). Can't go wrong with this artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars RL's Review of "As Promised", June 18, 2007
By
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
This cd is absolutely phenomenal! While slightly deviant from what would be considered prototypical Alex Bugnon, this piece is incredible! Alex's genius is well displayed from the sultry "Won't Be a Fool" featuring Angie Stone to "Chasing Spirals" with Branford Marsalis. The way Alex chose compositions which showcased the talents of the guest artists as well as his own goes beyond brilliant! This disc is a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alex Bugnon reigns again!, February 8, 2000
This review is from: As Promised (Audio CD)
The long awaited new CD by Alex Bugnon has finally arrived. Alex has return with a very well made CD which lived up to my expectations, and i am sure that his fans will concured. This CD is fantastic from the beginning, to the end,and there are no words to discribe this great masterpiece of work. Alex has mixed his usage of keyboards from the accoustic piano, to the electric with many other artists contribution of their talents that made this compilation of songs even more outstanding. this CD is well worth the purchase, and i am quite sure that it will not disappoint.
