4.0 out of 5 stars Works For A Guy
Hey, I'm a guy and I never used a sewing machine before in my life, but this one worked for me. It came threaded and ready to go. I managed to pull the thread out while performing a test stitch, but was able to re-thread it with the usual amount of tedious effort and the included needle threader.

It works much better than the other reviews here would...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too good to be true.
This is one of those items that really is too good to be true. I've read reviews of people saying that it doesn't work because the stitching just pulls out and because it doesn't have a second bobbin underneath, but that actually isn't true. If you pull the tailend thread through the fabric, you can tie it off and it'll hold the stitching. And the thread actually loops...

And the thread actually loops onto a hook underneath, where you would expect a second bobbin to be, and that's how it makes stitches.
The REAL issue with this is that the thread often slips off the the hook in the middle of sewing and you have a bunch of loose stitches. When it doesn't slip, it's great! Too bad it doesn't ever NOT slip. I managed to sew one seam of a dress I was making, the first seam, and after that it wouldn't sew without dropping stitches. Luckily I got this as a gift, and it has inspired me to start sewing, but now I need to get my hands on a actual machine that ACTUALLY sews. Don't waste your $10 + shipping on this!! Put it towards a real machine.

Beginner here. Needle broke within third use. Before that the machine would get stuck on even very light material (summer cotton). Not practical for sewing in a straight line, and the seams were so weak (even after making repeated passes) I was afraid to move my arms when I put my 'tailored' shirt on lest they tear. Very disenheartening. Learn my lesson!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the moneyf, November 29, 2004
I bought this at Michael's Craft Store, with a 40% off coupon, bringing it down to about $6.00.. and although it may look convenient, if you have ANY sewing skills whatsoever, I would HIGHLY recommend just sewing something by hand instead of spending the money on this handheld sewing machine. It's not worth the money or the hassle in trying to get it to work. It's really loud too, and takes 4 AA batteries, which makes it pretty klunky to hold.

1.0 out of 5 stars frustrating, October 27, 2004
I enjoy sewing, but don't like to lug around my mom's machine for simple things like hems. Luckily, I only spent $4 on this useless thing. I attempted to hem a pair of jeans, and it's fine for about 4 stitches, but then it stops feeding the fabric and the thread gets all jammed up into a huge knot. The box says it works on denim, but it didn't for me. Maybe it was just the material, because when I tested it on a scrap piece of regular fabric, it was fine. Also, it's difficult to make it stitch in a straight line.

All I have to say is this product is horrible. Thread breaks, hard to use, can on;y go through VERY thin material. Do not buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Handy stitch sewing machine, February 14, 2006
This item is junk. Their warranty says it all: the machine has to be returned under the warranty within 60 days, and the customer has to pay shipping both ways! IOW, $5.99 must be included with the machine for warranty service!

This tells me that they know their product is junk, and they don't want to see any of them coming back on warranty.

When it comes down to it, any company who makes a faulty product should be required to retrieve it at their expense, and then send it back fixed!

The machine skips stitches all the time, is hard to use, and the seam either unravels as fast as you sew, or it unravels when you're trying to get the machine off the fabric.

Bad design, junky product, good marketing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works For A Guy, December 4, 2004

It works much better than the other reviews here would suggest. The caveat, unnecessary to point out to any experienced sewer, is that since you have to hold it in one hand, you don't have two hands free to guide the material. This might mean you'll have to pin folded seams. Or not, depending on how clever you are and how neat you want it to be.

This item fell apart as soon as I started sewing with it, and it required glue to put it back together again. Once assembled, the motor went into some sort of overdrive and got really hot before it stopped working completely. Waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT AT ALL WORTH IT, March 25, 2006
A Kid's Review
I bought this as my first sewing machine, hoping to learn how to use one, but this does not work AT ALL! It unravels as you try to sew, or just wont sew at all. The needle is small and impossible to thread, and the machine broke within my first five stitches- it just sewed loops, not real stitches, that unraveled with a touch. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND INVEST IN SOMETHING BETTER!

A Kid's Review
this is a great starter sewing machine but it is way too loud! i am a eleven year old kid and a that has a great intrest in sewing but your better off with a needle! it is very hard to put the thread through the deformed needle. and the commercial is misleading. why is the lady holding a huge machine to make a small stitch! and women, would you want to carry this in your purse!?
