5.0 out of 5 stars Great product. I'm kicking myself for giving it away.
I got one after a surgery.
It was invaluable for picking up things that were on the floor, or up high on a shelf.

Deluxe folding model, great for traveling.

Gopher has suction cups that are probably better than the miniature claw type grabber units sold in Walgreen's (in the cane/walker dept).

I gave my grabber to an elder...

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap counterfeit! Avoid avoid avoid!!!
I had an original set of Deluxe Gophers I bought directly off the infomercial about five years ago. They were sturdy, well-designed and could easily pick up a two-to-five pound object with no problem. Most importantly, the suction cups were FLEXIBLE, but also firm enough to grip tightly. They were perfect for lightbulbs, if that gives you any idea of what I'm talking...

I gave my grabber to an elder family member and watched them pick up the smallest of pills that they had dropped on the floor.

So the gopher's suction cup design is great for picking up very small items.

Big lots previously carried a wanna-be gopher, with the movable trigger on the back (against the palm of your hand) vs the opposite setup on the gopher. Probably to avoid copyright infringement or such.
Big lot's version was only $3.99 and it was quite comparable.

For picking up small, lightweight items, it's great.
For picking up, or taking down items weighing over 5 lbs, I wouldn't risk it.
The ends are spring steel and with the rubber cups, you get a sort of "tensioned-grabbing" of the item.
Not a solid "clamping" like a wrench.

If an item weighs too much, it'll slip out of the grip of the rubber cups.

I think sales would be great for a bigger, heavier, "Industrial" version of this device. Something that could pick up like 15-20 lbs and which could maintain a fixed amount of tension on an item.

I have to give it 2 thumbs up, after seeing someone use mine to pick up pills that were the size of a "BB" (like used in BB guns).

I had an original set of Deluxe Gophers I bought directly off the infomercial about five years ago. They were sturdy, well-designed and could easily pick up a two-to-five pound object with no problem. Most importantly, the suction cups were FLEXIBLE, but also firm enough to grip tightly. They were perfect for lightbulbs, if that gives you any idea of what I'm talking about here.

Unfortunately, the screw holding one suction cup finally "stripped" (after using it about a hundred times a day, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner) and I couldn't find replacement cups anywhere.

Amazon shows three different places to get these, and these particular ones, at $3.99, seem like a great deal. Trust me, they're not. The cups are not flexible, the cable from the handle to the ends rubs against the sharp end of the square aluminum shaft (that puppy isn't going to last a week) and the locking mechanism DOES NOT WORK! I got two pair, and they're both the same.

All the plastic fittings are blue, rather than red, and it doesn't say "Deluxe Gopher" anywhere on them (unlike the original, where it is prominantly displayed on the handle and etched on the metal "arms" at the end).

These are counterfeit. Don't buy them, or if you're still tempted by the price, just throw four bucks out the window and use the postage to go to BarStuck's and treat yourself to a fancy-schmancy coffee.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF $3.99 PRICE FROM VEDANT GIFTS. THEY ARE SELLING CHEAP KNOCK OFF. NOT ORIGINAL GOPHER., September 6, 2006
Vedant Gifts is selling a CHEAP KNOCK OFF not the ORIGINAL GOPHER. This is a great item but you must buy the ORIGINAL GOPHER from a TRUSTED seller on Amazon.com. DO NOT BUY A CHEAP KNOCK OFF FROM Vedant Gifts. They are RIPPING CUSTOMERS OFF by selling a CHEAP KNOCK.

Wondering WHY Amazon hasn't stepped in. Maybe because they are busy making too much money on other products. DO SOMETHING AMAZON. STOP THESE CON ARTISTS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product with 2 big flaws., August 28, 2007

The Gopher is a good product and you do not need to be disabled to use it. I find if you want to pick up something like a newspaper it is fine. But for heavier objects it is annoying because it closes in half. Get the ridget ones. Also the suction cups tips and the bars that hold the tips at the end popped off one day. I saw replacement parts for other reachers but not the Gopher.
I suggest getting a few of them because they are throw away products if they break. Because like windshield wipers when you need them you really need them and you would hate to have them break in the middle of a storm with no replacement on hand. The ridget ones ino carry bigget objects. But all and all if did what it is suppose to do,

4.0 out of 5 stars Sure beats bending over!, January 14, 2008

We have a dog and a Dad (: to pick up after, and this thing is great! In the front yard, where the dog's toys and various twigs and leaves find themselves, the grabber is useful for avoiding dog drool, and it's much easier to use the Gopher than to bend over and pick up things twenty or so times. The garage and patio have bits of stripped wires and other things from Dad's projects, and, again, it's much easier to pick up these little pieces of rubber and wire with the Gopher than to bend over. At ten bucks, it's pretty much disposable and you can have more than one in the house. Save your back and avoid the tedium. Pick up a Gopher!

I laughed when a friend said she was buying this thing. Then I tried it! Wow! Where has this thing been all my life? Attention short people: Now you'll be able to get that box of Cheerios from the top of the refrigerator without the acrobatics! A small price to pay for convenience like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real lifesaver, February 13, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This product is awesome! I have two small children, and am pregnant with the third. The constant bending to pick up toys, clothes, etc. was killing my back... I can pick up anything from a brick to a paperclip with this gadget! I have bought a second unit for use outdoors.

This would make a great gift for anyone expecting or with back problems!!
