Wedding Bells,
By Matthew Gladney (Champaign-Urbana, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: As Time Goes By 10 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"As Time Goes By" stars Judi Dench & Geoffrey Palmer as Jean Pargetter and Lionel Hardcastle, who were once lovers in the early 1950s. Lionel went to fight in the Korean war, and the two lost touch. In the very first episode of the series, they meet again, and slowly begin to rekindle their romance. The wonderful series that ensues is a pleasure to watch.Volume 10 is comprised of the last four episodes of the 4th season. **At the time of this review, there are 8 seasons completed, and plans for a 9th to be produced in 2002.** These four episodes are great, but be warned that the season ends without much resolution. "As Time Goes By" is in many ways a serial, and the storyline often flows seamlessly from season to season. Episode 1: Jean has accepted a proposal of marriage from Lionel. It is now time for her, her daughter Judith, and her live-in secretary Sandy to prepare. It features a hilarious scene in which Jean attempts to figure out how many people can fit inside their home for the reception. Episode 2 features the wedding of Jean & Lionel. Both are nervous, both are elated. Every regular and recurring cast member is present, and it is one of the most touching, important episodes in the series' run. Episode 3 finds things a little different at home when Lionel & Jean return from their honeymoon. Jean's daughter Judith has a new boyfriend, though "boy" would hardly be the word to describe him. And, finally, Episode 4 sees the subject of Jean's possible "semi-retirement" brought to the forefront, and both her & Lionel take a trip to their house in the country. There they witness part of the mini-series based on their romance being filmed. And they are a little taken aback. This volume wraps-up the 4th season of "As Time Goes By". My favorite video for this particular season is Volume 9, but any one of the installments of this series will do. It is a great show. Warm and loving.

At long last, Jean and Lionel's wedding day dawns,
By Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: As Time Goes By 10 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"As Time Goes By" is a BBC comedy that stars Judi Dench as Jean and Geoffrey Palmer as Lionel. Once upon a time he was a dashing young British Army officer and she was a lovely student nurse; they fell in love but when he was shipped off to Korea their letters to one another went astray and now fate has brought them together almost forty years later. In Volume 10 of this video collectionEpisode 30 finds that the date has been set for the wedding and now all that is left is for Jean to drive Lionel crazy by coming up with a list of all the things that have to be done. However, Jean is having enough problems trying to find something to wear. Fortunately, before things can come to a head the couple discover that Alistair's (Philip Bretherton) attention to detail might be good for something after all. Episode 31 is the big day of the wedding, which finds Lionel up before the crack of dawn searching for things to do. The bride to be is absolutely fine, until her sister-in-law Penny tries to calm her down, thereby inducing a case of the hiccups. Episode 32 has Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle back from their honeymoon in Scotland and surprised to find that Judy (Moira Brooker) has a new romantic interest. However, it soon becomes clear that there is something about the new beau that is not going to go over well with her Jean and Lionel (well, actually, just Jean). Episode 33 has everybody travelling to the country home of Allistair's father where the American producers of the miniseries based on Jean and Lionel's romance is shooting some sequenes. However, it seems that they are now up to draft 22 of Lionel's script and everyone is schocked by what they see being shot. The two episodes having to deal with the wedding are great; more importantly they are totally in keeping with the characters that we have come to know and love. My only complaint is that I would not have minded an episode or two devoted entirely to the honeymoon in Scotland. Instead we get one brief scene. We have been waiting a long time for these two to get married and it would have been great to give them some time to indulge in some nice romantic moments all alone. Meanwhile, we wait patiently for Alistar to decide that he should take the plunge with Judy, which means this romantic comedy stills has some comedic romance to play out.

We have been fans of this series since the beginning and nowown the first 10 volumes. We would like to purchase the remaining volumes. When will they be available? There is nothing better in British comedies.
