This is just a fabulously entertaining television series -- funny and sweet. Although the seasons are short compared to US Shows (This set has 7 episodes), they're enjoyable enough that they're worth it. (Great things come in small packages.) Here's a quick summary of the episodes:
1. Jean suspects Lionel is going deaf, but he resists going to the doctor. Meanwhile, Lionel becomes convinced that Jean is having problems with her eyes. 2. Jean & Lionel take a parental interest in Harry, Sandy's policeman boyfriend. Yet the affairs of the younger generation seem to diminish in importance when Jean receives a phone message from an old flame. 3. Jean undertakes some strategic snooping to discover what the new neighbors are like. How is it they show up at the pub with black eyes? 4. The whole gang heads out to the country for the weekend. But road construction is about to throw the travelers for a loop. 5. Jean's brother, Stephen, and his wife are expected for another visit. To the Hardcastles' surprise, they arrive via separate modes of transportation to announce that they are having a tiff. 6. Jean gets everyone, including Lionel's father and stepmother, to help out with her old-age party at the church hall. Lionel is anxious about the whole idea, especially after being told to watch out for Mrs. Thrupp. 7. The Duncans abruptly vacate the dwelling next door, and Judith has the wonderful idea that she and Alistair move in. Lionel has his reservations, but they are nothing compared to the reservations of Judith when Alistair makes a surprising proposal.

Series 7
Episode 1 - Jean thinks that Lionel is going deaf and Lionel thinks Jean's sight is failing. Neither one wants to admit their own problem. Episode 2 - Jean receives a message from an old romantic flame. When she meets up with him he has not only lost is dashing figure but is a drunk. Episode 3 - The new neighbors arrive and Jean tries to find out everything about them. But all regret meeting them. Episode 4 - The entire gang goes to the country. When the locals are up in arms over a new bypass, Jean decides to head up the protest committee before she finds out what side the town is on. Episode 5 - Stephen and Penny are coming for another visit. But when Penny arrives first, Jean and Lionel discover Penny and Stephen are having a tiff. (And as expected a stupid one). Episode 6 - Jean gets the entire gang including Rocky and Madge, to help out with an event for the senior citizens. Episode 7 - When the new neigbors vacate, Judith thinks that Alister should buy it. But things change when Alister wants more of a commitment then Judith is expecting.

Evolution of the comedy on life,

We have watched all of the series in chronological sequence from the beginning through Series 7. Getting to know the characters and how each has grown over time allows the subtlety of English Humor to shine even more. As each episode ends you are left wondering what the next chapter in their lives will be. Highly entertaining.

We love the repartee between the characters. So nice to see adult, older people . Jean and Lionel are of our generation and this is life after 50. We chuckle and chuckle at the shows. Nice to see that they are combining series 8 and 9 as the Dvds are too short. I always feel a bit gypped because other series are 2 or 3 times as long.

I lived in England and loved this SitCom over there. I have series 1 through 7 and love them. You cannot go wrong with Dame Judi Dench!

I think this wraps up a nice series with the happy marriage of two couples that had ongoing romances. It always facinates me the way the English language is spoken by proper Brits. Very enjoyable to watch.
