About the Author
A dialectician with an avowed mistrust of any overt Hegelian metaphysic, a connoisseur of transparent analytical cubism and the gravitas of Empire furniture, an aficionado of Italo-Texas landscapes, and an adopted American with a fondness for the unreconstructed Southern rebel, Colin Rowe has continued to provide a valuable, intellectually respectable alternative to the prevailing (and persistent) architectural posturing of the day. Now living in Washington, D.C., he is the 1995 recipient of the Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects. He is only the third postwar critic, after Sir John Summerson and Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, to be awarded the medal, which is the architecture profession's highest accolade in the United Kingdom.
