David Sanborn - Then Again

Biography

DAVID SANBORN – ONLY EVERYTHING BIO

“Among the great saxophonists of the past four decades,” says one Rolling Stone writer, “David Sanborn has earned an identity all his own. He’s jazz, he’s funk, he’s soul, he’s pop, he’s blues, he’s rock. Most remarkably, he excels in each of these genres with a voice that is both forceful and ... That says it all. I've owned this one since it was born, and every time I lose it or kids BREAK the CD I replace it. It truly does stand the test of time and there's nothing trite or redundant about the tracks. They're wonderful from start to finish.David outdoes himself.

Wheather the tune be mellow or funky to the hilt David Sanborn always gives the music his all!And there are plenty of

examples of fine funk jazz to be found on 'As We Speak'."Rush Hour" and "Back Again" both groove hard and fit solidly into that

catagory while the opening "Port Of Call" takes a mellower trip down a similar path, highlited by Geogre Duke's steller solo on his patented castlebar clavinet! From cut one to cut nine this

album sparkles with joy and brilliant musicianship!

It's a 1982 release, so you have to expect a slightly dated and flattish recording compare to the nineties or current crisper productions. That said there are a few corking tracks here which cut the mustard. Marcus and Omar (how good a rhythm section!) do the business when required, and the opening drum intro from Mr.Hakim on the best track on the album (Rush Hour), is so funky. Dave Sanborn is a great alto & soprano sax player, and even back in the dim and distant eighties, is sooooo much better than the suicidal tiresome offerings from today's smooth jazz dullards. Fans of Marcus Miller also will find lots of trademark twanging to amuse & bemuse. This album is real low cost now, so sling it in the shopping basket.

What if you wanted to see some footage of a young Julius Erving or Oscar robertson? Could you just turn on the television and go straight to it, or would you need to find the right video, bribe your neighbor's husband, know a guy who knows a guy? I'm not sure how you'd go about that, but if you're ever in the mood for some vintage David Sanborn, here it is. While you're at it, break out the Onkyo amp, or the Kenwood, Sansui, Technics, Yamaha. Whatever you used to listen to music on back then. Sanborn will forever be preserved in his prime. That doesn't mean he is not still hard at work, extending the legacy because he is. But, this stuff, back when nobody knew where it was heading...It's remarkable. The song that led me to pull this from the shelf and blow the dust from the CD cover is "Rain on Christmas". If you play it together (as part of a triad) with "Lisa", from Hideaway, and "It's You", from Voyeur. Heck, throw in "One in a Million", also from Voyeur, and you can drift away into a David Sanborn sanctuary of the mind. he's got more, lots more. But, this is what I was doing today. I'm paying homage to the contemporary jazz elder-statesmen of the day (based on those who are still performing). I've got Sanborn narrowed down to two of those four. I may only be able to use one. What a wonderfully wicked choice to make. I would give this album a five, but it's got some songs on there that sound dated, and while it might have been a 4.5 or higher in 1982, we have to consider where we are today. My highest marks go for music that transcends time. So, my pick from this album is, Rain on Christmas.

David Sanborn is a powerhouse musician and anything he records is a pleasure to the ears. The first track, Port of Call, really sets the tone for this whole CD. If you like contemporary jazz, then this is a must-have for your CD library.

David Sanborn was on a real winning streak in the early 80's. His first two albums of the 80's Hideaway and Voyeur were both creatively funky triumphs and really set the stage for future albums such as this. Here Sanborn adds Michael Sembello as a guitarist/singer-songwriter and while the sound of the previous two albums is very prominant here there are some changes on the horizon. This album holds more weight in the rhythm section than before and rather than being a soloist out front Sanborn is a lot closer to sliding into formation with those musicians. Not only that but the emphasis is more on the fusion end of funk and you can here that on song such as the opening "Port Of Call" and "Rush Hour". Now with Marcus Miller onboard you just know there's going to be some funk in the picture so it is in that particular groove. All the same there is also something a mild soft rock quality to the overall production even on those two songs and on "Better Believe It",'Straight To the Heart" and "Rain At Christmas" that comes out pretty prominantly. Most obviously does this show up in "Back Again" and the closer "Love Will Come Someday",both sung and the latter written by Michael Sembello. These are the first David Sanborn tracks as far as I know with a prominant lead vocal on them and you can see how much the presense of vocals changes the quality of his music. On the other hand Sanborn brings out some more serious funk in "Over And Over" which is a bit more in the spirit of the previous two records. One cannot fault this record for not being exactly like what came before.Read more ›
