By Mark Seifter "Marcus" (Trumbauerville, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Asad's Legacy: Syria in Transition (Hardcover)
Eyal Zisser offers in his concise critical study of the regime of Hafez al Asad (1970-2000) not only a superb biographical treatment of the dictator, but a comprehensive treatment of the major directions of his regime, which in mid-2000 passed over to the leadership of his son, Bashar al-Asad. Zisser analyzes the ideological, partisan origins of the Syrian Baath Party, together with factors from the 1940'sinto the early 1960's that furthered the triumph of the Baath coup d'etat in 1963. He carefully considers the splits in the Baath leadership that enabled the rise of Hafez al-Asad to the top, climaxed in the "Corrective Revolution" in 1970. Zisser meticulously discisses the political, diplomatic and economic regimes of the Asad Government, always emphasizing its adaptability to circumstances. Finall, in his last chapter, Zisser sums up the achievements and factors left still up in the air by the long -tenured Asad government.
