"Ashes to Beauty" is a charming tale brimming with essential truths for girls of all ages. Based on the traditional Cinderella story, "Ashes to Beauty" tells the story of Ella, who is content for a time with her life in the Land of Near but eventually finds her heart longing for the Kingdom of Far Away. She faces ridicule and scorn and is continually told she is unworthy of anything more than her place in life. But Ella soon learns that she is called for something more, and that beauty is not in the appearance of the skin but the condition of the heart. This is an outstanding book for all girls, whether they are five, fifteen or eighty five. As a father of three girls, I heartily recommend it.

"Ashes to Beauty" is a wonderful version of the Cinderella fairy tale with an interesting twist. The writing style is whimsical yet a little quirky. You will be drawn in to the compelling descriptions and engaging plot.

In the land of FarAway, a glorious king rules with absolute perfection. However, his subjects treat him with cold indifference. To illustrate his love, the king fashions a land called Near, (which is close to FarAway, but distant just enough to help the subjects recognize their need for the king's assistance. Ella lives with her family in the land of Near. She works and lives an ordinary life. However, she knows deep within her heart that she is destined for a different life. When news reaches Ella that the prince from FarAway is coming to Near seeking a bride, she cannot help but hope that the prince will choose her. However, Ella's crafty mother and older sister are determined to stand in Ella's way.

This version of the Cinderella tale is beautiful in its simplicity and truth. The story beautifully illustrates all of our imperfections. Even Ella is marred by a face disfigurement that causes ridicule to be heaped upon her. I especially liked the fact that the heroine was far from perfect, and that the author of this tale emphasized how seemingly small actions, (both good and evil), can have lasting consequences. I also loved how outward beauty was shown as it truly is: superficial and not as important as inward beauty. "Man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16).

Please give this wonderful retelling of Cinderella a chance. The spiritual truths will touch your heart, and you will be transported for a time into a wonderful place. God bless you all.

This "fairytale for girls of all ages" offers a sweet story as an allegory paralleling the Cinderella tale. Ella's diligence and generosity lead to the Prince choosing her as his Bride. I like the way he answered Ella's mean mother: "You only see what you want to see. I see her heart and her dreams." Then Ella was transformed until she glowed outwardly also. The Prince and his Bride went off to live happily ever after in their fairytale come true.

The spiritual application isn't overt but shines through the illustrated short story. Supporting Scripture verses follow the text. The message of love and hope for the future is one all females need to hear. We struggle with beauty, but God looks at our hearts.
