First things last: I'm a huge Ryan Adams fan, especially Gold/Rock n'Roll/Easy Tiger. But anyone who gives this record a five stars I gotta ask: what are you hearing that I'm not? Outside of "Do I Wait" and maybe "Rocks", there's nothing memorable here. Ashes & Fire is kinda boring. Here's hoping the new one is a return to the old days...

I'm a big fan of old Ryan Adams (I think Heartbreaker is his best solo) and Whiskeytown. I was hoping Ashes & Fire had more of that sound and some songs do, but overall it sounds like 'new' Ryan Adams to me. Just a matter of personal preference on which style of his you prefer.

Does anyone miss "Love is Hell" 1 and 2? I sure do. He is a bit too Neil Young in this album. I appreciate his massive talent, but after the third song, I am done.

I am a huge Ryan Adams fan and have loved everything he has done from JCN to Rock n Roll. What so attracts me to his music is the realness, the starkness, the description of the simple, the heartbreaking facets of life; a life which is hardly ever bubbling with sappy optimism. But this album, as i feared first glancing at the cover, is an unprecedented Ryan Adams. He's happy, optimistic, loving his super-duper wife Mandy Moore, and life is no longer hard. Love has been found. No pain, no sadness. This has resulted in a new man. This album feels so utterly different to me i don't even believe it's the same person. If you've always wanted Ryan Adams to cheer you up and tell you it's all going to be OK, this one's for you. Me? I'm hoping for a divorce and a whiskey and cigarette infused, lovesick follow up. 3 stars because I know it's Ryan Adams by the sound of his voice and he's done too much good in the past for me to totally loose faith.

The download proceeded immediately and came through error-free. The price was very good and the material was complete and as advertised. No complaints. As for the material, it is a bit slow and countryish. I have other R.Adams stuff that is edgier and more along the rock lines, which I prefer. Still, decent output for one of the most productive singer/songwriters out there.

OH, man, Whiskeytown! THat was a band. It kept dude from being self-indulgent. But that said, the more time passes, the more albums like "Heartbreaker" and "Gold" seem like strange gifts ("Cold Roses" is also excellent; would be astounding if the strong songs were put together on one album). This album is okay. It's soft. It's about as good as "Jacksonville City Nights." But after a couple weeks no particular song is grabbing me. Maybe it's that I've changed? Still, if I were close to Ryan and believed he'd listen, I'd let him know that he's not a great falsetto singer and he should really avoid that entirely.

Since it's not a complete washout some will call it the return to form that it's not. He threatens with sentimental balladry à la "29", but most of these eventually turn into amiable second-rate songs if you play them loud enough. His standby of changing up with an electric guitar and organ in the finale is also welcome (check "Do I Wait"). But oh how sedate he's become. Of course, heartache is his metier, only once he had the good artistic sense of dancing it away, drinking it away. Even his falsetto had more grit.
