Book Description

September 4, 2012 October Daye (Book 6)
A New York Times bestseller!

It’s been almost a year since October “Toby” Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day’s sleep.  She’s tried to focus on her responsibilities—training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester’s knight, and paying the bills—but she can’t help feeling like her world is crumbling around her, and her increasingly reckless behavior is beginning to worry even her staunchest supporters.

To make matters worse, Toby’s just been asked to find another missing child…only this time it’s the changeling daughter of her fellow knight, Etienne, who didn’t even know he was a father until the girl went missing.  Her name is Chelsea.  She’s a teleporter, like her father.  She’s also the kind of changeling the old stories warn about, the ones with all the strength and none of the control.  She’s opening doors that were never meant to be opened, releasing dangers that were sealed away centuries before—and there’s a good chance she could destroy Faerie if she isn’t stopped.

Now Toby must find Chelsea before time runs out, racing against an unknown deadline and through unknown worlds as she and her allies try to avert disaster.  But danger is also stirring in the Court of Cats, and Tybalt may need Toby’s help with the biggest challenge he’s ever faced.

Toby thought the last year was bad.  She has no idea.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“October Daye is as gritty and damaged a heroine as Kinsey Millhone or Kay Scarpetta.... Toby’s nocturnal existence is full of the kind of shadows that keep the pages turning. Changelings, like all faerie folk, live long; may McGuire and these novels do the same.”
(The Onion A. V. Club)

"This newest installment in McGuire’s October Daye series is fast-paced, without ever being frantic, with excellent characterization.... McGuire is a dab hand at dialogue, and the bantering between Toby and everyone -- especially Tybalt -- is one of the highlights of the book."
(RT Book Reviews)

"McGuire applies a hard-boiled mentality and a keen appreciation for mythology to a blend of politics, magic, and romance to make this the most entertaining series installment to date."
(Publishers Weekly)

"The October Daye series is one of those delicious worlds that becomes more and more beloved with each visit, and Ashes of Honor is my favorite of this series to date."
(All Things Urban Fantasy)

"With Ashes of Honor, McGuire has crafted a deeply personal and intense story that will keep you on the edge, hoping to be pushed over. In my opinion, it is, hands down, the best Toby to date."
(The Ranting Dragon)

"The October Daye series has become on of my favorites, and it just keeps getting better and better."
(Fantasy Book Cafe)

"Swearing! Running! Sexy times! Leather jackets and folklore and secret offspring and tales of lost love. It’s all so much fun."
(SF Signal)

"Why are you wasting time reading my rhapsodic review? Just go get the book, and see for yourself, if you’ve been following the series right along. If not, go get all six books.... If you love well written urban fantasy, with unique and interesting characters, you won’t be disappointed."
(Tome Tender)

About the Author

Seanan McGuire is a California-based author with a strong penchant for travel and can regularly be found just about anyplace capable of supporting human life (as well as a few places that probably aren’t). Early exposure to a vast number of books left her with a lifelong affection for the written word, and led, perhaps inevitably, to her writing books of her own, starting somewhere around the age of eleven. The October Daye novels are her first urban fantasy series, and the InCryptid novels are her second series, both published by DAW and bother of which have put her in the New York Times bestseller list. Seanan was the winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer; Rosemary and Rue, the first novel in the October Daye series, was named one of the Top 20 Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Past Decade; and her novel Feed, written under the name Mira Grant, was named as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2010. She also won a Hugo for her podcast, and is the first person to be nominated for five Hugo Awards in a single year. You can visit her at www.seananmcguire.com.

More About the Author

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and modern horror (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats.

Seanan is a member of the Book View Cafe, where her short fiction is regularly published for free, and the author of the "Velveteen vs." series of superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly and Alice, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.

Seanan's favorite things include the X-Men, folklore, and the Black Death. No, seriously. She writes all biographies in the third person, because it's just easier that way.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop reading and rereading the last chapter September 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Synopsis: Toby Daye is depressed and living life on the edge, much to the chagrin of her friends and family. But now a previously unknown and powerful changeling has gone missing, and the Court of Cats is in disarray. Toby had to rise to her role as a hero and face the many truths of her life.

Review: Saying that I love the Toby Daye books is an understatement. This book not only did not disappoint, but it blew all the other books out of the park. The last book ended a story arch, so this was the beginning of the next arch. The storyline for the next few books was set up beautifully. The author's strengths are seen in the beautifully crafted plot, chapter to chapter. I loved the little hints she dropped of what is to come, with the introduction of new characters and little tidbits of Toby's heritage.

I love her characters and relationships. Toby is not a perfect heroine by any means, yet she brings a maturity that is rarely seen in many UF books. She makes mistakes and faces up to them like the adult she is. We see vulnerable sides to many of our favorite characters. We see Tybalt's past, May's frustrations, and Quentin's worry over his best friend. Tybalt is all over this book, and as he's my favorite character, it made me read it that much faster. And of course, my favorite relationship made lots of progress this book.

I love how Toby always hurts herself and brings herself closer to death in a more vulgar manner. Even better is her family and friend's reaction. Mocking Toby is everyone's favorite past time, and I love reading it!

I can't sing enough praises for this book. If you loved the first 5 books, the 6th installment is sure to blow you away.

Sex: Kissing
Violence: Lots of blood and fighting. Toby's guts strewn all over the place. Fun.....!!

"Look. We are doing the best we can. We are calling in every favor and every ally that stands even the slightest chance of helping us out here. But we're not miracle workers."
"Then what's the point of being magical creatures?" asked Bridget, still glaring.
"We get a discount at Starbucks," I said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ashes of Honor September 5, 2012
By RandiTS

It's always a good day (ha - play on words!) when a book in one of your favorite series comes out and lives up to your expectation and today was a great day.

Toby (October Daye) is still emotionally recovering from Connor's death and the loss of her daughter Gillian, who chose to be human when given the "changeling's choice" to be fully human or fully fairy. She has been withdrawn from those around her and basically has been taken risks that would make a normal person - fae or human - dead long before now.

This is not the best emotional state to have Etienne, one of the Knight's in her liege's service, come to visit with a MAJOR problem. Turns out, sixteen or so years ago, when Sylvester (her liege) was lost in his personal grief, Etienne turned to the human world to escape trying to keep everything in Shadowed Hills running smoothly. Etienne met a woman and fell in love but not just any woman - a human who was a professor of "fairy tale studies" at Berkley. If you are going to make a mistake, go big! And, to make it even better, he learns that he fathered a "changeling" who has now disappeared - literally - in front of her friends. Bess, the mother of his daughter, has contacted him to demand that he return her daughter immediately, thinking that he or the fae have stolen Chelsea (his daughter).

Etienne comes to Toby to hire her to find his daughter. Of course, she isn't going to turn him down but this is not going to be an easy case. Not only is there the emotional parallels to her own daughter but Chelsea has more power than even a full blooded fae should have when it comes to teleporting - and the places that she is going into are the parts of Fairy that Oberon had closed permanently. If she continues, she can literally rip Fairy apart. The problem though, is that not only can Chelsea not control her powers but she HAS been kidnapped by Fae that are using her for this ability.

While I enjoyed the storyline of Chelsea and the tracking of her, what I LOVED was the fact that the author addressed the unique relationship between Tybalt and Toby. This has been teasing us all for the past five books and while I won't give out any spoilers, it does change - and not always for the better. Even if Toby decided to fall head over heels with Tybalt tomorrow, the Court of Cats has plenty of members that do not like her or her influence over Tybalt and Raj and that is going to have to be dealt with whether any of them want to or not.

Quentin is growing up and it shows in this book and we get more hints about his mysterious background but wish it was more than his ability to sing folk songs about fishermen (you have to read it to find out what I am referring to!). We also spend a lot of time in the Tamed Lightening Court and meet new characters there as well.

This book is more emotional growth than plots between kingdoms although there are those as well which makes it a welcome change. If the characters of a book don't grow, the story will eventually get stale and lose its appeal. In Ashes of Honor, Toby starts to embrace the woman that she should be "when she grows up". But don't worry - there is plenty of humor, lots of great lines, and more to love of all of the characters.

A great addition to the series and I can't wait for the next book to come out!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Payoff September 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ashes of Honor was the big payoff for those of us following this series. I won't regurgitate the plot. Needless to say, Toby has another seemingly impossible task on her plate to complete. As usual her task is filled with danger at almost every turn. But the difference this time is while the task is still dangerous, Toby has changed.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Toby has matured since the last time that we saw her. Losing loved ones has made her more introspective and cautious. She has also realized she has a lot of friends out there that love and support her. Toby grew up when I wasn't looking and turned into an adult. She gets a great prize for that growth, but I'll mention that later.

During the course of her adventures, the regular cast of friends show up to help and lend their support. Quentin, May, Jaz, Tybalt, etc. are all there helping her. The underlying story regarding Etienne and the unrest in the Court of Cats was interesting, but it was a sidebar to Toby and Tybalt for me.

There is finally some movement in Toby's relationship with Tybalt, the handsome, enigmatic, King of Cats. I have always loved Tybalt and finally I have a book with lots of Tybalt throughout. For those of us waiting for the big payoff between these two, it is finally here and it was really sweet.

This was the best one in the series and for long time readers it is a can't miss. I'll be pre-ordering the next book in the series as soon as possible.

The Coming of Age of October Daye
Ok I have looked on wikipedia for fairy queens and of course the two mentioned are Shakespeare's Maeve and Titania. There is reference to two more Oona and Elpham (Elphen) it is possible one of these could be Oberon's third lover.

As for the crazy mum thing, I wonder if she checks the doors... Read more
