A sensitive subject beautifully handled.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ashok by Any Other Name (Hardcover)
My own children have gone through the pain of having names not considered "American." They loved this book and it helped my youngest, age 8, to deal with her feelings of exclusion based upon having an Indian name. What made the book special was the hopeful and realistic resolution to the story. It helped my daughter a lot. This is a book that deserves much greater recognition.

Very Nice Message,

This book, featuring a South Asian Indian-American boy, nicely captured feelings about an unusual name and trying to fit in. The multicultural aspect and the words of advice from an African-Ameican teacher were a nice message. It was a little long for the kindergarten set, but when I read it to my son's class, it sparked a nice discussion with the children eagerly talking about their names. This book should be in every school or daycare library!

This book featuring a South Asian Indian-American boy led to interesting discussions about names with my children. The situation was realistic and I liked the multicultural aspect with the talk between Ashok and and an African-American teacher.

A bit unexpected...,

This review is from: Ashok by Any Other Name (Hardcover)
The book is a joy, though perhaps not for a child as young as is recommended. I was surprised that the book isn't simply about "an immigrant boy who wishes he had a more American name" as all the reviews of this book implied. The book has quite a heavy undertheme of the wrongs of African slavery in America. While it is certainly a topic that should be discussed with a child, it isn't one that I am ready to introduce to my young child quite yet. This book will be wonderful at 7-8 years of age.

I really wondered how the story would be resolved and I loved it. It was a very realistic but also inspiring ending. Kudos to the author. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

My son was given this book by his teacher.I was a little skeptical but upon reading it with my son, I had to order a copy for our family. This story is right on the money. I like the realistic resolution. I wish I'd had this book as a child! I wish the author would write more books. Love this story!
