This isn't a dvd collection, in my humble opinion, for anyone who has NOT already learned at least the very basics of the ashtanga yoga practice. It's a uniquely strong and structured style of yoga, and I doubt you could learn from scratch without live, in-person tutoring from an expert.
But once you have the basics of the practice, these DVDs are fantastic for honing your practice at home. Richard Freeman has a very gentle and articulate way of describing how each posture should feel, how to get into it and how to come out of it. For me, after probably 10 years or more of on-and-off practice and now living too far away from my original ashtanga teacher, it's been the perfect way to get back into the routine safely and with greater awareness than I could on my own.

This is a great dvd set for anyone wanting to learn the basic foundation of ashtanga yoga. One can use this dvd set every day for a couple months before taking a formal introductory class. In this way, one will not be as self-conscious learning in a room full of students. The instructor speaks with clarity and the background is uncluttered with extra bodies, sights, and sounds. He does the series in a slow, conscientious, meditative manner. Each aspect of the flow is examined in detail and strung together at a speed that is very manageable for a beginner. Mr. Freeman's form is impeccable.
So far I have only gone through the first two dvds. I am really hoping on the third he will explain how to float in slow motion from standing at the top of his mat to chaturanga at the bottom. He first folds his legs but then extends them fully in mid-air and floats back with grace in a manner that seems to defy gravity. I have tried many times to do this part but have not achieved what I see on the video. I expect this set to keep me busy learning new nuances for many years.

This was truly a pleasure to watch, and learn from a master. I am an advance student of yoga, and a yoga teacher. I have paid much more than the price of this set for work-shops. It's very hard to find a school that teaches Ashtanga yoga, This alone has enought info to keep you interested for months to come.
