Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, The Primary Series is a valuable practice guide for the beginner through to Full Primary level practitioner. Take a 15-minute class with John Scott and begin your personal yoga journey, or follow John through a complete 90-minute Full Primary Series. John Scott is an inspired and advanced practitioner of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. He has been a direct and continuing student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, South India since 1989. Certified to teach by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, John's teaching is very precise and follows the traditional method of counting through the correct vinyasa for each asana. This is a great opportunity to practice with a teacher who teaches from the heart. Join in and practice with John's dynamic balance of strength and grace; share his knowledge and enthusiasm for passing on the joys and techniques of this ancient form of yoga. No variations are given but this DVD provides several shorter versions of the Primary Series (in addition to the whole thing) for the less advanced.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Primary Series DVDs, February 21, 2009
This review is from: Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series with John Scott DVD (DVD)
John Scott is an amazing teacher, unfortunately not as well know in the US as he is in the UK. John's focus to breath bandha and dristi is unmatched. This video is great for those of you making your way into the Ashtanga practice. You can break it off in small chunks by choosing your level of practice. This seems to be the best presentation of the traditional method for learning the poses slowly over time on a DVD. No one should learn everything from a DVD but this a very nice supplement to your practice. John has a calming melodic voice that brings a bit of softness to a very demanding practice... truly from his heart, you can't go wrong with this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless Instruction, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series with John Scott DVD (DVD)
I've really enjoyed using the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series with John Scott DVD.

The setup of the DVD is interesting. You can follow the practice from multiple angles, so you get a really good sense of how each movement is performed. Unfortunately, with my new Blu-Ray player, I do not seem to have an "angle" button, and cannot take advantage of this feature anymore. It is a real shame, but a problem with my DVD player purchase, and not the DVD itself.

I really like the filming. It is simply John on a black mat in a white room. If you turn off the commentary, there is some nice music accompanying the practice. Personally, I prefer to leave the commentary on.

You may also want to take a look at David Swenson's DVD (Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice, First Series by David Swenson). Although I own several yoga DVDs, I find that his and Scott's are my favorites, and I keep coming back to them.
