Book Description

January 11, 2012
ASHTANGA YOGA: Stories from Beyond the Mat is not your typical “Yoga” book. Jason Stein skips the posture photos and Intro to Yoga Philosophy to explore personal topics in this frank, revealing, and often funny collection. The essays, sketches, notes, and how-tos contained here all address with reverence and humor the many ways a daily Ashtanga Yoga practice saturates life both on and off the mat. All content newly revised and rewritten, including: “White Elephant Versus Termite Practice” “How to Start a Mysore Program” “Ashtanga Yoga and Crossfit” “What First Series Taught Me” “The Agonies of Yoga Photos” “6-Pack Abs with Ashtanga!”

5.0 out of 5 stars True to the practice March 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Jason Stein's book, 'Ashtanga Yoga: Stories from Beyond the Mat' is unique in a demographic where the vast majority of available literature is in the form of practice manuals, anatomy lectures, and esoteric spiritual texts.

In Stories from Beyond the Mat, Stein relates a not-particularly-comprehensive look at the modern Ashtanga 'scene', his personal practice, views on life as a Mysore-style teacher, travel, family, and a variety of other topics, in the form of short stories and essays.

At times side-splittingly funny, sometimes startlingly touching, and occasionally completely impenetrable, he does a fine job combining irreverence with respect, all the while imbuing each story with genuine humanity.

If you practice yoga, particularly Ashtanga, BUY THIS BOOK.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing August 20, 2012
By LG

It's hard to say what this book is about. Between the adolescent harangues about - well - adolescent concerns, there is a piece that's well written and insightful. Most of the pieces aren't worth the bother and unless you find a guy discussing his 'package' funny, you won't enjoy his humor, either. He may know the postures well, but does he practice yoga? Doesn't sound like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't do yoga and I loved it. April 11, 2012
Funny, informative and entertaining.

The yoga and crossfit chapter caught my attention so I read that one first and was hooked.

Stein's stories of travels to India, coming to terms with committing to a new practice, possessions, comicbooks and a thousand other things made for an entertaining read.

I don't even stretch and I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! April 3, 2012

This is not a yoga instruction manual like so many out there, but instead a rare collection of insights and stories from Stein's personal experiences with practicing ashtanga yoga. Not to say that you can't learn something from reading it as the author's knowledge and respect for the practice definitely shine through. Anyone who has practiced yoga can find something in the book to relate to.

The author's straightforward honesty and wit make this the funniest book about yoga that I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Yoga Classic August 9, 2012
By Jamie
Everyone that does yoga or is thinking about it should read this book.

And if you do Ashtanga yoga it will strike a special cord with you.

As I was finishing the book I was regretting that it would soon end.

This guy is a great writer, and as I've now just discovered his blog, there are some gems in there.

This is a really level headed approach to yoga, and I found myself unable to stop laughing aloud at some of his antics and views.

I found his writing and views motivating, a special talent.

I reckon he would teach a hell of a class.

Hopefully there is more of this to come.
