Book Description

November 1998 0471834505 978-0471834502
This study of Asia's financial crisis of 1997/98, its sources and history, suggests solutions for the rehabilitation of the financial systems for those countries in distress. The author shows that although the root of the problem lies in asset inflation, competition from China, malinvestment and structural deficiencies, the shortcomings of Asia's banking systems are also a major factor behind the crisis.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The 1997 Asian currency crisis first began in Thailand, then spread to Indonesia and South Korea and created a domino effect on the rest of the Asian economies. Here, leading correspondent Louis Beckerling explores the many aspects leading up to the crisis, covers each country's currency collapse, and offers insights into the possible future political implications of the crisis which could be dramatic and violent. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Asia in Crisis The Implosion of the Banking and Finance Systems Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Asia’s economic growth astonished the world. The region’s stock markets soared to new heights, unprecedented economic growth rates were recorded and an acquisitive new middle class emerged. Then overnight, it all fell apart. The question now being asked is: Who brought the party to an end? In this penetrating and thoughtful account, Philippe Delhaise points the finger squarely at Asia’s antiquated banking and financial systems. Everything else - the currency panics, the social and political shocks - is simply a stream of consequences flowing from the main source. What is exceptional about the crisis is not that it happened but the manner in which it came about, inflicting indiscriminate devastation to all. The story of the Asian Crisis is a tale of greed and sorrow, of intelligent people making unforgivable mistakes and of a collective misunderstanding about the management of economic expansion. Asia will undoubtedly recover but the speed and strength of its re-emergence will depend on how well it has learned its lessons. The concluding chapter of the book outlines the many issues that need to be addressed and provides a template for the future development of the region’s finance industry. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but style detracts, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
Very interesting book. The author's anecdotes are entertaining. However, a quick read will reveal that the author has an enormous ego! His style is irksome; often he will praise himself or his own company's analysts, with the tone that "if the world community had listened to us, there wouldn't be an Asian financial crisis."

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading, written with knowledge, style and humour, January 18, 1999
By A Customer
A dry subject and obviously written with immense experience and access to data in this field, but nevertheless written with style and humour that makes this book well worth reading. A must read for bankers and those on the fringes of banking, especially in the Asia region.

4.0 out of 5 stars A 'must read' for anyone in Asian banking., December 4, 1998
This review is from: Asia in Crisis: The Implosion of the Banking and Finance Systems (Paperback)
Although the subject matter of this book appears dry and very specialized, I found this book to be easy reading, humourous and thus entertaining, whilst at the same time very concise and providing an invaluable insight into the Asian banking scene. Obviously written by somebody with immense experience in this field and with a wealth of research material at his fingertips, it is a 'must read' for anyone in Asian banking or on the fringes of it.
