From Library Journal
Meant for students, this reference lists 45 American writers of Asian descent, giving a photo, a short biography, a list of major works, criticism and reviews, and further resource materials. The authors cover most of Asia. Some are famous (Maxine Hong Kingston, Ved Mehta, Amy Tan, David Henry Hwang), others are "emerging" (Chang-Rae Lee, David Wong Louie), and still others are of historical interest (Carlos Bulosan, Sui Sin Far, Pardee Low). All genres are represented, but some authors with only one book to their credit are included, while many others have been excluded. In addition, some authors that leap readily to mind have been left out since many Asians writing in English are British or do not live in the United States. The critical materials are drawn from a small pool of resources and will date quickly, and a few minor errors occur (Eileen Chang's year of death, for example). Despite these drawbacks, this is a solid resource full of useful information. For academic libraries.?Kitty Dean Chen, Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, NY
