Book Description

October 1, 1992
From the optimism of the early days of the Vietnam War through the grim reality of the body counts and body bags, a history of the conflict and its effects answers questions about the most debated period in American history.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-9-- Detzer's view of the Vietnam War is summed up by his use of the word ``tragedy'' in the title. He covers its background and consequences in a lucid, chronological order, and he makes clear to readers that each incremental step taken by the U. S. brought more problems for the citizens of both countries. Sharing the view of many historians and authors, he sees much to regret and few real heroes to admire. Much of the book's tone is similar to Marrin's very good America and Vietnam (Viking, 1992), but Detzer writes on a slightly lower reading level and does not provide as much detail about the lives of the American soldiers and the Vietnamese people. Overall, this is well written and interesting, and will hold readers far better than Isserman's The Vietnam War (Facts on File, 1992). However, it joins a multitude of recent titles about the war, and there is little here that is different enough to make it a first purchase. It would be a good choice for those who find the Marrin and Isserman books too difficult. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
