Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Scholarship in feminist art and women's studies is significantly expanded by the appearance of these volumes. Asian Women Artists is a collection of 15 short essays introducing the work of scores of little-known Asian women artists from different religious backgrounds and countries, including China, Korea, Taiwan, North Vietnam, and India. Some of the well-illustrated essays were first published in ART AsiaPacific, where Dysart and Fink are art editors. In concise prose, the authors, mostly art historians, curators, and critics, either survey a sequence of women artists from a region or country or discuss a single artist. This book successfully demonstrates how many Asian women are now taking a progressive feminist perspective, rather than perpetuating national traditions. Art facilitator and consultant Voigt's tome begins with several pages of generalizations on feminist art theories and then becomes exciting reading. Voigt interviewed a large number of Australian women artists, directly or by questionnaire. Responses from 34 women?including a few Aboriginal?are recorded here, commenting on their own works. Color plates are lavish; the interviews and illustrations are immediate and up-to-date. Most artists are postmodern in outlook but not derivative. Important short biographies conclude the volume. Like Asian Women Artists, Voigt's book is highly recommended.?Mary Hamel-Schwulst, Towson State Univ., Md.
