Book Description

9 and up4 and upLily Series, The
At last---Lily's in middle school and it doesn't take long for her to get right into the thick of things. She joins the school newspaper staff and becomes the anonymous writer of the 'Answer Girl' advice column. It's all in fun at first---Lily gives witty answers to such questions as 'What do I do about a dog that keeps eating my homework?' Then Lily gets a more serious query and actually gives helpful advice, and it's not long before word gets around that the mysterious 'Answer Girl' can solve ANY problem. Before long Lily thinks she's Dr. Know-it-all---reading every sidewalk psychology and self-help book she can lay hands on, and watching afternoon talk shows. But things quickly go sour when Lily steps outside her boundaries. After her 'expert' advice nearly costs her a close friend, Lily realizes there isn't always a clear-cut answer, particularly in those gray areas. But once again, Lily learns that God is the REAL answer giver.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rue's appealing series has made consistent appearances on the CBA bestseller list since it began last year. It's no wonder Lily, a brainy middle-schooler, is both lively and lifelike, much more robust than her counterparts in other religious-themed fiction. The problems she faces tend to be staples of girls' series: in Ask, for example, Lily starts an advice column in her school paper and ends up needing a dose of her own counsel. When she turns into a "rebel," Lily becomes interested in Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi and goes overboard with her desire to improve students' treatment at school. But Rue develops these conflicts with imagination and sympathy for her character. Lily's parents and her stalwart friends redirect her to prayer and God. Fortunately, the parents are free-thinking enough that their responses may catch readers off-guard once in a while. A hallmark of this series is its nonfiction tie-ins; companion volumes offer straight, candid and Christian advice on topics related to the novels' themes. For these novels, there will be The Blurry Rules Book: It's a God Thing ($7.99 paper -70152-X) and The It's MY Life Book: It's a God Thing ($7.99 paper, -70153-8), both by Rue. A YWOF (Young Woman of Faith) journal and Bible are also available.

At last – Lily’s in middle school and it doesn’t take long for her to get right into the thick of things. She joins the school newspaper staff and becomes the anonymous writer of the "Answer Girl" advice column. It’s all in fun at first – Lily’s witty answers to such questions as "What do I do about a dog that keeps eating my homework?" Then Lily gets a more serious query and actually gives helpful advice, and it’s not long before word gets around that the mysterious "Answer Girl" can solve ANY problem. Before long Lily thinks she’s Dr. Know-it-all—reading every sidewalk psychology and self-help book she can lay hands on, watching afternoon talk shows, and even tries to talk her parents into letting her see a therapist, just so she can get firsthand knowledge. But things quickly go sour and as usual Lily steps outside her boundaries. When her "expert" advice nearly cost her a close friend, Lily realizes there isn’t always a clear-cut answer, particularly in those gray areas. But once again, Lily learns that God is the REAL "Answer Man."

5.0 out of 5 stars A really fun and Realistic book, May 19, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ask Lily (Young Women of Faith: Lily Series, Book 5) (Paperback)
This book is a lot of fun to read. I like how Nancy Rue doesn't just write about skinny or pretty girls because not everyone is really like that. Lily is a normal girl who wants to find out what she's good at. When she gets recommended for the Middle School Mirror, (her school's newspaper) she thinks she'll become the next big reporter. Then she becomes "answer girl," the column becomes great and popular, but there's a catch. She can't tell anyone that she's the answer girl because they would tell the whole school. So, she find herself in a tangled up mess of lying to her friends and her parents and the popular girls who suddenly decide she's cool. When I first read it, I found it really suspenseful. But it's not just about Lily lying, it's about her figuring out what is important and why it's bad to lie. I've read this book about 3 times and I still love it just as much.
