Trying to find the perfect birthday present for his mother isn't easy for Danny. The hen offers eggs, the goose feathers and the sheep wool. But mother already has those things. Then the cow suggests that Danny go ask Mr. Bear. It's from him that Danny gets a special and unique gift for his mother.

My mom loved this book as a child. I loved this book, too. I was so excited to see that this book was still available that I am buying it for my 5 month old son and a new copy for his grandma. The illustrations haven't been changed I couldn't be more pleased.

The little boy of this story doesn't know what to give his mother for her birthday and so he consults a number of animals (chicken, sheep, etc.). None of the suggestions suit him until Mr. Bear suggests a precious something no mommie can get enough of from her little boy or girl.
This book was written in 1932 but its message is timeless. If you want a book that reinforces nonmaterial values, one that your child will love and that strengthens parent-child bonds, consider this one. Four generations in our family have met Mr. Bear and the fifth is just about ready to. Five stars, definitely five stars.

My wife loved this book as a small child -- so much so that she made me find it here on Amazon.com. She quotes it frequently, and plans to give it to our nieces and nephews.

I think this is a great book for younger set. Another book with a more modern spin is Scott Beck's, "A Mud Pie for Mother" much like this but a little more current. Read more
