5.0 out of 5 stars A Family Classic
My mom loved this book as a child. I loved this book, too. I was so excited to see that this book was still available that I am buying it for my 5 month old son and a new copy for his grandma. The illustrations haven't been changed I couldn't be more pleased.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Present
This is not a book I ever liked.

It's Danny's mother's birthday and Danny wants to give her something. He asks every animal on the farm what to give her. They all suggest things she already has.

Finally a bear tells Danny to hug her for her birthday, so he does. End of story.

This story always seemed like a letdown to me. He could...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for Our Time, April 4, 2006
The little boy of this story doesn't know what to give his mother for her birthday and so he consults a number of animals (chicken, sheep, etc.). None of the suggestions suit him until Mr. Bear suggests a precious something no mommie can get enough of from her little boy or girl.

This book was written in 1932 but its message is timeless. If you want a book that reinforces nonmaterial values, one that your child will love and that strengthens parent-child bonds, consider this one. Four generations in our family have met Mr. Bear and the fifth is just about ready to. Five stars, definitely five stars.

My wife loved this book as a small child -- so much so that she made me find it here on Amazon.com. She quotes it frequently, and plans to give it to our nieces and nephews.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Classics of All-Time, May 28, 2011

This book has been much-loved at our house. My daughter wanted it read to her again and again when she was two or three, so we recorded her little voice saying the animals' names along with mom reading the rest of the story. Now she's in her twenties, and she still remembers what a wonderful book it is and how much fun she had making the tape (back then...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story! A real classic, November 17, 2009
By
This review is from: Ask Mr. Bear (Paperback)
3 yr old son has enjoyed this story although he was a bit nervous the first several readings when we would get to the bear part. He is old enough to know that one doesn't approach a wild bear in the woods and that the farm animals were right to stay away! However, after he saw how this imaginary story was going to go he now finds it fun. It is a good but subtle review of the items each farm animal gives to people, is a great lesson that the best presents are not material items (although those are nice too!) and is a great excuse for big hugs all around at the end of the story. We especially enjoy this story in the evenings, at bedtime since it ends with hugs. Sweet story about a thoughtful son and a Mother who enjoys her son's hugs!

This was my daughter's favorite book when she was a child and I was so happy to find it for her so she can read it to her grandchildren. It is a timeless classic.

I can recall reading this book to my much younger siblings and then to my own 4 children; now I am reading it
to my grandson. I especially like the way the animals help the little boy find a gift for his mother with the perfect
gift not being something material but just a lovely big hug. What a wonderful message to pass on to a child.

This is a childrens classic as far as I am concerned. The pictures are a bit dated, however that only adds to the charm of this book. Danny travels from animal to animal looking for the best present for his mother and everything that is offered by the animals his mother already has. Finally it is suggested he goes and asks Mr. Bear. What a wonderful present Mr. Bear suggests. Wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multigenerational Favorite!!!, June 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Ask Mr. Bear (Paperback)
Ask Mr. Bear is sweet and simple yet engaging for the preschool aged child. In addition, it shows the child a shining example of "thinking outside the box" in a day and age where fancy and expensive gifts are the rule rather than the exception. I remember this being my absolute favorite book as a child and now I can re-live it all over again with my own son. A+

Danny's mother's birthday is approaching and he has no idea what to get her. He wants to give her something special, but just can't think of the right present. Not coming up with any ideas, he asks a hen. Not finding help there he goes to a cow. The cow tells him to ask the bear. It is here that the bear offers the gift Danny has been searching for.

"Ask Mr. Bear" has been a classic children's story for a long time, and will surely delight future generations of children. The only thing bothering me, now that I am an adult, and can look upon the story in a different light is - what would have happened if Danny had asked his father first?
