Hauntingly beautiful,

This review is from: Ask the Night (Audio CD)
My first impression of this album was disappointment at its brevity. Despite clocking in at under 30 minutes, this CD packs a lot of punch, because there is no filler. I find myself singing along with even my least favorite of songs and none of them get skipped. Fink's song writing is stronger than ever. In High Ground (which can be heard in full on MySpace), Fink sings "...when the water rises, they start to look for high ground just like me when you come around." Most of the album was recorded live which works to its benefit, though it's so well played it's sometimes hard to remember it's live. Orenda's voice is as lovely as ever, but it's much less produced than her previous releases giving it a more raw, intimate, and engaging feel. Ask the Night comes highly recommended.

beautiful record--not long enough!,
This review is from: Ask the Night (Audio CD)
of course, Orenda Fink has been busy since her last solo LP. she has written pretty much every song for her bands Art in Manila and O+S, also she tours with bands like Rilo Kiley, and has been working on new stuff with her Azure Ray counterpart Maria Taylor. Hearing her on her own again is refreshing, even if only for 28 minutes. This album has some real gems, such as the opener Why is the Night Sad, High Ground, Sister, and the new, more acoustic version of The Garden, amid all the other songs. its another artistic dream for someone who is IMHO Saddle Creek's finest singer-songwriter, and obviously someone with a lot of devotion to what she does. this one is a worthy addition to her incredible back catalog, also worth checking out...Invisible Ones Set the Woods on Fire o+s Hold on Love
