Relevant, Fast, and Witty. Did I Say...Also Deep?, May 29, 2008
This review is from: Ask the Professor: What Freshmen Need To Know (Paperback)
Just purchased this book last week. It is a well written book that is written in snippet form such that you can read a nugget then put it down...but it is hard to. Holder and Edwards provide a lighter side to a view at college life while providing some very deep insights.
If you have trouble getting your high school senior to read anything beyond the required reading list, this book might be the difference as it is witty while providing some deep truths to apply to college life.
The only downside to this book's depth is that, unless you have been to college, you will not appreciate how true some of the subject matter is...
You will be glad you purchased this book...

Parents and Upcoming Freshman Should Read, November 3, 2008
This review is from: Ask the Professor: What Freshmen Need To Know (Paperback)
What a great resource for upcoming freshmen and their parents. I sat down to read just a bit - and found myself reading the entire book in that one sitting. Not only is it a very entertaining read (comical and light), but it's full of great advice. Later in the week, I was quoting things I'd read to my current freshman and my "next year" freshman both. I have encouraged both of them to read this book ... and they both say they will - maybe my bursts of laughter while reading got their curiosity up enough to give it a try. I am sure once they pick it up, they'll read it from cover to cover and will remember the lessons they can apply as the subject matter arises for them personally. Thanks for such a deep yet light-hearted read. It's very refreshing to read a book about college preparation without all of the heavy stress that comes with most information out there!

Read it--You'll love it!!, June 27, 2008
This review is from: Ask the Professor: What Freshmen Need To Know (Paperback)
What an excellent resource! My husband and I enjoyed reading Ask the Professor as much as our 2 older children. It's direct, detailed, witty, and discusses many topics most of us wouldn't think of in preparing our children for college. And how valuable that it comes from a professor's point of view--like picking the professor's brain for the most important advice he has to offer! A fabulous tool for parents as well as college bound students. This book should be required reading for every rising senior and their parents. We're looking forward to reading more in this series to come!!

I wish this book was available when I was a college freshman!, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Ask the Professor: What Freshmen Need To Know (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed the book myself, and as a mother of an upcoming senior in high school I appreciated the book. The authors have laid out in an entertaining way important aspects of college. Most of us that went to college relate to what the authors are saying but may not think to share all of these topics with our college kids. The authors also share from a professor's viewpoint, and who couldn't use the benefit of knowing what the professor may be thinking? Much of the information given even applies to students in high school. I also liked the fact that the book is written in short essay form so a chapter can be read quickly. The book is definitely an easy and quick read but also a great read!
