From the Back Cover

"I seek the lessons God wants to teach me, and that means that I ask why."-Elisabeth Elliot

God does many things we do not understand. When faced with suffering, sickness, death, and confusion, most people can ask only one question: why? Elisabeth Elliot, one of the outstanding women of present-day Christianity, knows too well this feeling of uncertainty. But she also knows that God will answer.

On Asking God Why offers honest insights into many of today's most prevalent heartaches, including cancer and death, family issues and loneliness, aging and hopelessness. Chapter by chapter, this insightful book will remind you that God invites his children to lay our questions before him because in him we will find every answer we need.

Elisabeth Elliot is the author of more than twenty books. Her titles include Passion and Purity, The Journals of Jim Elliot, and These Strange Ashes. She and her husband, Lars Gren, live in Magnolia, Massachusetts. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars bought it, read it, loved it, April 18, 2007

Having always thought that Ms Elliot wrote primarily for "christians who live in a quiet world, where a good pot of tea and a good night's sleep would solve all problems", i started out being rather biased towards her works. After all, how could an elderly lady tell me about the difficulties of faith and christianity in this modern day and age?

I was wrong, of course.

As the title suggests, the book is not just a book with methodology "do this, that, and that, and you'd be alright". Its a collection of essays, of reflections and questions that she had while trusting God.

Are the questions just limited to her world? or to put it simply, are these concerns still relevant? Yes they are.. Wherever questions remain unanswered, where there are people who suffer loss, where we find times when its easier to "do the easy thing" than "the right thing", her essays will help the reader gain a Godly perspective.

Would recommend it for those who are seeking a more reflective book.

I have never had someone attack so many diffrent issues in one book. She discussed everything from aging to full submission to Christ. I would say that the theme was living a life that was 100% for Christ. A great read and a book that I have already refered to in diffrent conversations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trusting God In A Twisted World, August 16, 2010
"Trusting God In A Twisted World" by Elisabeth Elliot focuses on various questions Christians may have in the world we live in.

Among the topics covered include:

1. Being a single

2. Abortion

3. Divorce

4. Promoting yourself instead of letting God do it

5. Why we should go to funerals

6. Judging

7. Hell

8. Tenderness

Among the points covered include:

1. The Bible is more important than psychology and other fields of science.

2. We are not on earth to please ourselves. Instead, focus on what God wants.

3. If we are to follow God to the marketplace, the self-promotion methods of this world will not work for us. Having spent several years in sales, this chapter was my personal favorite.

4. The pathway of self-denial will lead to ultimate fulfillment.

5. A daily quiet time with God is very important.

A good and encouraging read for the Christian who struggles (and we all do at some point) to live in this world.

Recommended.
