Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe three disc (two CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of their 2001 debut album featuring a bonus CD containing additional studio and live records plus a bonus DVD that includes videos, home movies and exclusive live footage. Asleep In The Back is home to many timeless tracks which remain firm fan favorites and make up a good proportion of their live shows now, including the singles 'Powder Blue', 'Red', 'Newborn' and the epic 'Scattered Black And Whites'. The album was nominated for that year's Mercury Music Prize, which they would go on to win in 2008 for Seldom Seen Kid. Universal. 2009.

From the opening track "ANY DAY NOW" i was hooked. ELBOW has become one of my favorite bands of all time. Their live shows are fantastic. Buy this CD. Worship the ground ELBOW walks on. Bow down to them. They deserve it.

Elbow just can't make a bad record. In fact, they have yet to put out anything less than excellent, but I'm sure some people will disagree. This is such a tight album and since it was proceeded by so many enticing little single releases, it's a shame it didn't win the Mercury. Time, however, has rectified this slight.

There are so many excellent b-sides from this era that the band has really thrown us for a loop with this reissue, but for die hard fans, this is by no means a bad thing. Asleep In The Back is easily worthy of a four-disc box set. What they did here is release (as bonus material) the rarest of the rare Noisebox EP (albeit missing a track) and some really excellent live material that to my knowledge hasn't surfaced before now, save the Red LAMACQ Radio version. If you love Elbow, you probably own all of the b-sides already. What this live release does is prove how strong Elbow is as a live band, emerging from underneath the albums studio wizardry with some truly excellent playing. Most of the tracks here have a softness exposed without extra feedback but with all of their gorgeous strength completely intact. I suspect no one today has ever doubted this bands live ability. If you're already familiar with this album, your love will be reaffirmed as you've probably played the original to death. Now we have a live recording of most of it ready for taking up permanent residence in the stereo.

Brilliant! Remember when rock and roll was actually inventive and melodic. These dudes are actual musicians that really write interesting melodies, harmonies, rhythms, sonics, and other important things to go into their songs.

Elbow is very very good. Their songs are emotional and powerful. For me they are too intense for every day listening, but I really enjoy this now and then.
