Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The beautiful images of the photographers of Hill Photographers have helped catapult this coffeetable book into one of the most prized possessions for both Aspen locals and visitors. The photography plainly shows that nature has been the primary backdrop for the ascendance of Aspen into the limelight.

From the Inside Flap

Here is a view of Aspen through a collection of photographs depicting one of America's most popular resorts and its setting in a dramatic natural landscape. At nearly 8,000 feet, Aspen is nestled in a high alpine valley in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, surrounded by designated Wilderness and National Forest. Despite a growing urban influence, Aspen defines a transition zone with nature where an intimate history of the rugged West remains a predominant feature in its character. While Aspen is known primarily as a ski resort, it is also a cultural and artistic community abounding in diverse forms of expression. Its history goes back more than 100 years to a rough-and-tumble silver mining past that produced the largest single nugget of high grade silver ever extracted from a mine. Aspen's legacy is as rich as the mountains from which the silver ore was mined with dynamite, mule, pick and shovel. A strong preservation effort has saved many of the old buildings built in the Victorian fashion of the 1880s and the town is resplendent with a charm all its own. But nature continues to hold sway with a vast expanse of public lands abounding with recreational opportunities. Horseback riding, skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, mountain climbing--the list goes on. It is no wonder Aspen is an international destination, summer and winter. Aspen in Color compiles photographs from Hill Photography, images of nature in one of the most magnificent regions in the Colorado Rockies. The work of nine photographers, all associated with Hill Photography, this book characterizes the natural environment of Aspen and its human heritage. It shows nature in its many moods, and chronicles the activities of the city's residents and visitors. But the human element is in the background. It is the intent of this book to describe nature in rich color. For nature is Aspen's true heritage, the source of its historic mineral wealth, recreational quality, cultural fame and lasting beauty. Here is Aspen in Color.
