This review is from: Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Helping Preteens and Teens Get Ready for the Real World (Hardcover)
This book is organized and very readable. Each section discusses an area where a person with Asperger's Syndrome might have a deficit/challenge. For each "problem" area, there is a short clinical discussion of what the deficiency means (for example, what the heck is "executive function"), then a practical description of how this difficulty might manifest itself in behavior (difficulty with performing particular tasks), and finally some ways that the parent/teacher/other might help the youngster work through or around the problem. This book is my current favorite, as my 11 year old son moves from the shelter of elementary school into the more open middle school environment. The book addresses social skills, academic skills, and has lots of ideas for when and how to help (or keep out of the way!) your child. One section that really impressed me is about special interests, rituals, and routines... The author emphasizes that these need not be viewed as obssessions, compulsions, and rigidity of behavior!

This review is from: Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Helping Preteens and Teens Get Ready for the Real World (Hardcover)
This is the best book I have read on AS in quite a while. It is one of the few that addresses the differences in adolescence. Those of us who have been in the AS world for awhile know there is a lot of info out there for younger children. Now that our children are getting older, their challenges change. This book really helps in that area. I loaned my copy to my son's educational assistant and she doesn't want to give it back <grin>! Great book, must read for parents of AS adolescents.

This is a must-read for anyone who has or works with AS kids. My son was misdiagnosed from early childhood, so I'm not too familiar with the literature for younger kids. The anecdotes in this book really shed some light on the characteristics of AS. I could have inserted my son's name into many of these stories. I will be buying this book for several people who work with my son. They need this information!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative!, March 25, 2006

This book is practical and helpful. I have learned more about the areas I need to be targeting with my son. It has also increased my awareness of more of the things my son faces on a daily basis and how to approach them better.
The Author gives specific ideas of ways to prepare your child for their future and how to get on the same page with them so you are a team and not another problem in you child's life.

The practical advise she gives is great! I love the lists and ideas she shares that I can use to brain storm with which really helps me to get the ball going.

Through my sons diagnosis we found out my husband has AS. This book has helped him tremendously understand why some things were/are so difficult for him, like social rules (ex: elbows on the table- the why of it). This book has helped him understand himself and be able to see what is happening in himself better.

I would recommend this book for parents, staff that work with AS and for adults with AS. It is a fast read and very beneficial. I think I am going to have my child read it as well.

A good book for parents. In the social skills intervention we developed, I recommend a range of books for parents based on their accessibility and general sensitivity to parents needs. This book is one of the ones in that basket - there aren't many. I would also recommend reading Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

4.0 out of 5 stars very complete reference, February 27, 2006
Offers a good background of asperger response to the real world and also gives a number of suggestions on how to support the person and or make their world more liveable. The suggestions are able to be done by family and school. Most of them do not require any special techniques or equipment, just an understanding of AS and the people if affects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Asgerger Syndrome And Adolescence, January 9, 2007
It is a very good book that will help you understand how your AS. kids head works as well as gives good advice to help with their education. anyone with an AS. kid knows that educaters tell you that they deal with this all the time, and that is true only they really dont know what it is they are dealing with. Which makes it a great reading assignment for their teachers. You can't be afraid to call them on the carpet for what they dont know. Another good reading assignment is Freaks Geeks And Asberger Syndrome

5.0 out of 5 stars Strategies you can actually use, April 12, 2011
I read all of the books on Asperger's that I can get my hands on. As my child approaches the teen years, I've started reading books on Asperger's and adolescence. This book is so far beyond the others in its practicality and depth. I'm already using some of the strategies! Other books will tell you, yes, your child will have problems in school, with socialization and with perseverations in their teen years. This one actually gives concrete advice to deal with those issues. It is awesome! Get it, get it, get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Useful, and Enlightening, April 14, 2008
By
Mary Bondo "pbondo" (Jackson, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This book is one of the best I've seen about the transitional issues that arise when someone with Aspergers reaches their teens. With my son, we find each developmental step has its own challenges, but the movement into middle school, with the increased expectations of self-management and the early teen student issues among peers has been a bigger challenge than most. This book helped me frame these issues as they apply to my son, improving my understanding. Then I could apply many of the ideas provided both directly and through the school. My biggest problem is that this is such a slow read ... not because it is hard to read (to the contrary, its very understandable and straightforward.) Its a "slow go" because of all of the underlining and page marking I am doing to track the "good stuff." Dr Bolick has done those of use living in these situation a major service with this work! I fully recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Must Have !, April 10, 2007

More and more books are addressing the problems ASD kids encounter in their latter years . Teresa Bolick has written a well thought out and structured book that answers many of the concerns that parents and teachers have. Would you need another book dealing with this area ? I would say...yes. It is such an important time in these kids lives that a comprehensive knowledge is needed by all those that care for these yound adults.
