This review is from: Asperger's Answer Book: The Top 275 Questions Parents Ask (Paperback)
I have purchased many of these books. I keep them on hand to give to teachers, coaches, etc to help those working with my grandson to understand him. This book can bring a positive change in attitude which helps both adults and kids succeed.
We all have to help educate those unfamiliar with this spectrum disorder in order for those working with and around our children to make things better -- not worse for them. This book makes is the best I have found. This book is in layman's terms so everyone can understand. It deals with many issues thru childhood to teens. It tells you what type of behavior you might expect and why. For me -- it is a woderful helping tool.

Great resource for parents of AD kids of all ages,

The characterizations of symptoms and behaviors are clear and straightforward, with specific reference to variations for young children, mid-year children, and teens. Most important, in nearly every case the author presents helps, aids, resources, and coaching to help the parent stabilize the situation and improve the child's behavior and happiness over time. She'll actually tell you where you'll have little chance for immediate success and where there is a good chance for improvement. She'll put the words in your mouth ("In this case, use phrases like 'That's OK, just keep going,' or 'We can finish it later, no problem.'").
I have taken her excellent chapter on Thinking Problems and summarized it in a chart for constant reference. Her definition of the many sources and types of professional resources is invaluable.

Asperger's Answer Book,

Although not having a child with Asperger's Syndrome, but having friends who have, I have always searched for a resource that would help me better understand Asperger's, not just to understand the children better, but to hopefully also be able to be of support of their parents. The Asperger's Answer Book is just the ticket; it is written in clear language offering great tools for anyone to understand the scope of Asperger's and all that is involved. The book has taught me to recognize even characteristics and personality traits that I never could have fathomed being a part of Asperger's. The Asperger's Answer Book truly is more than just a book of "answers," the insights offered are invaluable, plus it is one to fall back upon over and over again when situations dealing with Asperger's raise doubts and questions. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

My nine year old son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, so I have been reading lots of books on the topic. This is by far the best book I've found. The question and answer format is very readable, there isn't a lot of technical jargon, and the way the chapters are divided is very helpful in allowing one to target exactly what topic you need.

I for one cannot thank the author enough for this book. This is the first book I have read that confirms so much of what I have seen in my son, and questioned. He is 8, and was just recently diagnosed with Asperger's. This is the first book that cuts through all the jibber jabber of so many other books I have read, and gets down to the nitty gritty. It answers the question's thoroughly, concisely and clearly, and yet doesn't go on and on and on. It's explained in layman's terms, treating the parent with respect and having intelligence. There is one other book that was given me, it's written from an author with a child who has Asperger's, but it has so much filler, what she has gone through personally, etc. For some they may like it, for me, just give me the facts! And this does it. I was able to read it quickly and yet retain so much good advice, positive exercises, and oh, so much more. I am amazed at how much information, exercises and heart warming advice was put into this, not so big book. This book has started to open my HB's eyes, as he is still in denial with our son's diagnosis. But as I read so much of this to him, you can see the wheels turning, and that 'ah' moment in his eyes. Thank you Dr. Ashley, you have done not only the children, but the parents a huge service with this wonderful book. ((Cyber hugs))

This is a great book, incorporating answers to the 300 most common questions asked by parents of children with Asperger's Disorder. I work as a clinician and highly reccomend this book for parents of kids with Asperger's, as well as clinicians and mental health care providers who interact with this population. A great resource!

Descriptions are right on,
This review is from: Asperger's Answer Book: The Top 275 Questions Parents Ask (Paperback)
As an adult recently diagnosed with Asperger's I have purchased dozens of books to understand this condition. THis book is a great resource. It does what it says it will do and does it well. I found the characteristics of people with Asperger's to be a very good match for my experience. I appreciate the variety of information offered. I am buying another copy of this for my sister whose teenage son was just diagnosed.

The author treats all AS children the same and acts as if they all have the same exact profile,
By
This review is from: Asperger's Answer Book: The Top 275 Questions Parents Ask (Paperback)
I found that the author was rather black and white in her descriptions of children with Asperger's Syndronme which she refers to as Asperger's DISORDER. All children with AS do not have the same sets or degrees of difficulties and the author would make statements that led one to believe otherwise. I found it unhelpful and would not want someone else dismissing a diagnosis based on this book. An example would be that the author states the AD child DOES NOT: show much interest in other people or share in the interests of others. That is untrue in many cases. Some may have difficulty with it, for others it may be impossible, but for others yet, they may seek out others and friendships and have plenty of empathy for those they care about. Read Tony Attwood's book instead to give you the answers you need to understand the SPECTRUM of Asperger's. The author here does nothing to qualify her sweeping statements and treats all Asperger's children the same. I have read upwards of twenty books on AS, and I was the least impressed by this book.

Dr. Ashley did a wonderful job of creating a well researched, up to date, easy to read and very informative book on Asperger's. I work in the clinical psychology field and Dr. Ashleys book is the best I have yet to read on Asperger's syndrome. I recommend this book to all without any reservations!
