Seventy-year-old Indianapolis PI Deets Shanahan is at home minding his own business when someone takes a shot at him through his front window. Uncertain whether the shot was intended for him or just a random drive-by, Shanahan is nonetheless hell-bent on finding out who and why. Meanwhile, his sometime partner, Howie Cross, is surprised and chagrined to find that his one-time lover Margot has delivered her five-year-old daughter, Maya, into Howie's care, with no indication of when she'll be back or where she's gone. As Shanahan and Cross try to sort out their respective problems, they find themselves intimidated, pursued, threatened, shot at, beaten, insulted, and, in Shanahan's case, left for dead. The underrated Tierney writes in a style similar to the redoubtable Robert B. Parker, offering crisp, snappy dialogue; succinct but witty prose; characters with principles; and enough clever humor to keep even the dourest mystery buff laughing out loud. A fine series that deserves more kudos.
