Product Description

For the first time, fans of the blockbuster Gears of War video games get an in-depth look at Delta Squad’s toughest fighters–soldier’s soldier Marcus Fenix and rock-solid Dominic Santiago–as well as a detailed account of the pivotal battle of the Pendulum Wars.

As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they were torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus–decorated war hero, convicted traitor–the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep.

As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be re-lived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them–but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago? --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars one giant "meh", December 21, 2008
The first half of the book was fairly decent and interesting but the constant jumping between time periods and peoples thoughts started to get annoying after a while. Also it takes over half of the book for the battle to acctually happen and when it finally does its not that interesting or epic.
If your a gears fan, its worth checking out to get some backstory to the storyline and characters, if not, dont bother with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good . . .not great, November 5, 2008
If you are a Gearhead (Gears of War Fan) you will love this book as it really fleshes out the main characters back stories. It will answer some long standing questions & create some new ones. This book reads well & is good escapist fun. I'm usually not one to buy a novel from a video game, but Gears is different here because the 1st game doesn't give any back story really. It just throws you in the middle of the fray. That being said I enjoyed the novel & look forward to the next one in the planned trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as good as Contact Harvest, August 26, 2009
This book provides some backstory to the game. The author has clearly been around the military, as she uses a lot of Army terms and lingo. That's refreshing. The book jumps between a current timeline mission, set between GoW1 and GoW2, and the battle of Aspho Fields, 14 years prior to the E-Day. However, the book barely explains the reasons behind Marcus's mother's desappearance - which appears to not really be a big deal in big scheme of things. None of the nuggets that you will find in the book are crucial to the storyline and, overall, the book is just another story set in the GoW universe. That is the only reason I am giving this book a 4/5 rating. It's a fun read but not a must have for fans.
