5.0 out of 5 stars From A True Pimp's Perspective....., May 20, 2003
This review is from: Ass Gas Or Cash (Audio CD)
This is one of the most slept-on albums of all time. No, this IS the most slept-on album of all time. Every song on this CD is tight. You can just put this CD in your player and just let it ride. There's not one dull moment on this CD. He's the pimp that everybody forgot about, but I didn't. I had this on tape, but it became damaged. (Back when everybody was buying tapes.) I'm seriously going to get this back on CD version, and will not let this out of my sight. This CD will go into what I call, "Classic CD's", because this one was definitely was a classic. What ever happened to K-Dee? Ice Cube, what up? Where yo boy at???

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Poppin' Wit This West Coast Gangsta Shiznit, December 4, 2004
This review is from: Ass Gas Or Cash (Audio CD)
I can see why this CD is so expensive, man this CD is a just another tru west coast classic this did not get no pub and I will call it the most underrated west coast gem ever. K-Dee where are ya man. These fools in this studio rap game today don't have nothing on this cat when it comes to pimpin'. The best tracks are the whole CD from "The Best Thing Goin'" to the title track "Ass, Gas or Cash" w/my man Bootsy adding his voice to the last song and my man Cube for discovering this great talent. I can't believe that this cat hasn't released anything since. K-Dee, rap music needs you right now to sit this so-called pimps down and put the whole rap music industry down. So if you planning on spending this kind of money on this CD, it is worth every penny, trust me.

This is it! One of the most difficult CDs to get your hands on. It is well worth the time and the money. There were a number of great slept-on albums from this time period that dropped from the West Coast. Do the research and locate the gems!!!

Who is K-Dee? One of Ice Cube's homeboys and a collaborator from the days pre-N.W.A., Cube finally put him on by releasing his sole album, 1994's "A.., Gas or Cash (No One Rides for Free)," the first album on his Lench Mob Records, and executive produced it as well. To me, K-Dee is basically a better version of Too Short: a raunchy, laidback pimp obsessed with pure, unadulterated funk music, but smoother, funnier, and more talented than the Oakland vet.

"A.., Gas or Cash (No One Rides for Free)" is a great LP. K-Dee is likable and quite clever, with a slick flow and cool delivery. He spins tales about L.A. life and the trials and tribulations of a pimp with no shortage of humor. The production also shines, handled by some of Ice Cube's own producers including Madness 4 Real, 88 X Unit, and Vic C. Using polished samples from classic funk and soul, they execute a great feel that suits K-Dee's style very well. Another great aspect of the album is the guests from 1970s funk legends. P-Funk's Bootsy Collins and The Time's Morris Day both contribute great vocal and musical appearances, lending K-Dee's tracks genuine funk elements and setting them apart from the truckload of West Coast g-funk in '94 with R&B stylings.

It's a real consistent, soulful listen. Early highlights include "The Freshest MC in the World," which samples Deniece Williams, and the entertaining "Make the Music." "Gigalos Get Lonely Too" is a great collaboration with Morris Day, and "Into You" is a standout tale about a hilarious crush on a friend's mother with a bouncy beat. Still the best track might be the closing title track, a twangy five-minute jam session with Bootsy Collins.

"A.., Gas or Cash (No One Rides for Free)" is a really strong record. It's hard to believe that an album of this quality and with Ice Cube's co-sign could be so unknown, but I guess that in '94 L.A. just had more great rap characters than fame had room for. That said, it's one of rap collectors' most sought after items and is nearly impossible to find today. I recommend rap fans keep their eyes peeled anyway. The level of brilliance in 1994's hip hop scene was astounding, but even with so many great releases "A.., Gas or Cash (No One Rides for Free)" stands out. K-Dee's sole record should not be overlooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Descent but not classic, February 20, 2011
By
This review is from: Ass Gas Or Cash (Audio CD)
This album is good but not great, Certainly not worth 60 dollars. Sometimes Kdee tries too hard to convince us he's a pimp. In my opinion Too Short and Sugafree are better with the pimp raps. Its obvious that Kdee wasn't that great, he went down as a one hit wonder. Besides ''the freshest mc in the world'' which is a great track, the album lacks the magic of a classic. I gave it 5 stars based on the rarity and potential it had, and I loved k dee on Ice cube's album. I recommend you grab it if your a west coast rap fan, but don't pay a hefty price for it.
