This album is NOT supposed to be a alternative country album. It is simply metal through and through. The Assjack band is Hanks metal output. Anyone buying this album should expect nothing else. An artist is free to express themselves in many ways and not always the ways we expect. Thats what they do. As an album it is excellent for its genre. If you like hard rock/metal dont think twice about getting it!

Not the Hank III That You're Used To,
This review is from: AssJack (Audio CD)
But thats not necessarily a bad thing. This is a lot heavier than the Hank III most people are used to. This is also not an outlaw country album. It is hard to classify but the closest I can come is metal or stoner rock. If you're looking for the Hank III that you're used to he's not here (but it is the same guy). If you have heard the Assjack bootlegs that have been floating around for a while, than you know what you're looking at here. Also, if you've seen Hank III in concert, than this is the band he comes out and does the second half of the show with. If you are into, Assjack or stoner metal than this is a pretty good album. You get the stoner metal sound but with Hank's song writing ability, which is phonomenal. If you've only heard Hank III, and you're looking at this album, just preview the tracks (right here on Amazon) before you pick it up. If you know Assjack or are into a heavy sound, than pick this album up right away. This album is a great represnetation of the other side of Hank III.

I got into Hank 3's music a few years back and I haven't been let down. He definetely doesn't water down any of his material. This album (to me) doesn't sound anything like any of his previous works. This is not a country album by any means. The best way I could describe it is "In Your Face" hardcore presented in a style that only Hank 3 could deliver and nothing less!!!

No this isn't intelligent metal. It's not tech metal or anything hugely original. A lot of people on here are fan's of his normal country stuff. Personally I wasn't hugely impressed with that, if I'm looking for rough country I'll stick with his friends [...]. What this album is however is a lot of fun. Pure balls to the wall energy, pissed offness, and honestly a lot more in your face and heavy than most metal bands that do this full time. Oh and this certainly isn't stoner rock or metal. That is always slow and brooding and a totally different sound all together. So take this album for what it is, a lot of fun, a lot of adrenaline, and honestly some pretty good hardcore metal. Really it's a lot better than most metal coming out and it still has an honest blue collar trailer trash attitude to it. It's worth picking up for any of his fans, and any fans of metal in general.

I was going through listening to Bill Monroe, then wondered over to Hank Sr, then I thought, "Hank III does a bit of rockabilly" so I looked him up. First Risin' Outlaw and Rebel Within are just classic examples of a guy that took his granddad's sound and added a twist to make it his own. This album popped up in my search and I gave it a test listen. When I scrolled down and saw it was Hank III, I was blown away. Such a great mix of punk rock, hardcore and heavy metal! I can't wait to go driving with this on in the car out in the country!

heavy hank3,
This review is from: AssJack (Audio CD)
having seen hank3 in charleston,s.c. last year i found it almost amusing that as soon as the country portion of the show was done, the country people filed out leaving assjack to play in front of about 50 people which was really cool.good cd.the other reviewers are right,if you're into the heavy sound that actually sounds good then purchase this.

Assjack,
This review is from: AssJack (Audio CD)
Pure in your face metal from III in his own original way. This is what separates Hank from everyone else in the business. Nobody else in country music could do anything close to this album. Most of these songs have been around for quite awhile in bootleg form and finally get an official release. My only complaint could be is that there are only 10 songs on the album, but at least all 10 are good songs.

Hank III kicks it up a notch here. I always loved his solo stuff but this sound is way more up-tempo. I hope this is only the beginning. I look forward to more Assjack in the future. If you are into hard rock and like a different sound here is your CD.

I am a big fan of Hank III. It was just a random chance when I learned of his AssJack album. After buying and listening to it here's my impression:
It's not anything country at all. while "Straight To Hell" and "Damn Right, Rebel Proud" had their punk moments AssJack is as far away from Hank III's hellbilly work as possible. It's loud, heavy and has III's distinctive twang. It's a sonic assault all by III himself (he plays all the instruments). And while it's a solid work it's marred by being deliberately overdriven and marred by the heavy clipping. There was a review of the MP3 version which took aim at the poor audio quality. That person can be rest assured: The CD itself is badly clipped. And the clipping is more than magnified through lossy formats such as MP3. The extra-thick layering of the final mix certainly doesn't get better when it hits 0dB. It's great but suffers. It's worth a listen. It's only about a half-hour long but I still recommend it despite its flaws.

This is pure "Southern Thrash Metal", that is very aggressive music. Hank III is definitely a versatile musician.,

This is pure "Heavy Metal" from beginning to end. I consider it to be "Thrash Metal", which is a sub-genre of "Heavy Metal". You can do a google search & find out about "Thrash Metal". It's a very aggressive type of "Heavy Metal". Anyway, I ordered this because I wanted to hear what Hank III would sound like doing "Metal". So, now I know. I like his other stuff better. However, this does have it's place. When I'm ever in an aggressive mood, then this ablum will be great stuff to listen to.According to the recently released book "Family Generation - 3 Generations of Hank", it describes Hank III's Heavy Metal band Assjack as sounding like Pantera (from the Dallas, Texas area). I agree with their assessment. It does sound a lot like Pantera. Also, another band that it sounds like to me is Artimus Pyledriver, named after the famous Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle. Artimus Pyledriver has performed with Hank III before. Also, there is another Southern Heavy Metal Band, named "Nashville Pussy", that plays aggressive heavy metal. My favorite part of this "Assjack" album is at the beginning of the song "Redneck Ride", it starts off with a short, introductory version of "Dixie". Anyway, in conclusion, this is "Southern Heavy Metal" that has a very aggressive sound to it. Thanks!!! |
