Book Description

0786413883 978-0786413881 July 2002 Rev Sub
This fully updated and revised edition provides a thorough look at the many world leaders who met their end in a violent manner during the last century, from William Goebel, Kentucky’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee in the election of 1899 who was shot on January 30, 1900, when he contested the election he narrowly lost—to General Ansumane Mane, the former army chief of staff ousting President Bernardo Vieira of Guinea-Bissau who was killed in a gun battle with soldiers in Blom on November 30, 2000.

This book includes political assassinations, political executions, unsuccessful attempts against major world figures, and overviews of violent political events and their major victims. Arranged chronologically, the entries detail the manner, the motive, the assailant (when known), brief biographical information on the victims, the immediate effects on the political climate of the day, and in some cases, the final fate of the assassins. The prologue provides a summary of those leaders whose assassinations fell before this period.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

RBB praised the 1986 edition for its completeness. The author, an independent scholar, has compiled a number of other subject encyclopedias. The preface notes the work provides a concise look at "major world figures" who met their end through political assassination or execution. The entries cover (when known) the basic facts of the act, the motive, the assassin, and the subsequent effect. Earlier assassinations in history, from Julius Caesar through 1899, are briefly described in the prologue.

The approximately 1,200 entries are arranged chronologically by year and then date of the event. The length of each entry varies from one sentence to two columns, depending on the importance. In some instances, several persons executed by a tyrant are grouped together. Attempts that failed are also noted. The bibliography of secondary sources includes the works used in the first edition. The index lists people, nations, and topics such as drug traffic.

The work is accurate although minor English errors were noted. Some might question the author's choice of individuals to be included; a Kentucky political party head and a New York City crime boss are here though they are hardly "major world figures," while the execution of labor organizer Joe Hill by the state of Utah in 1915 and the first killing of a prominent civil rights leader, Harry T. Moore, in Florida in 1951, are not covered. Nevertheless, the work is recommended for public and academic libraries. Encyclopedia of Assassinations (rev. ed., Facts On File, 2001) covers 300 such acts throughout history. RBB
