Our Last Stand?,

This review is from: Assault on Atlantis (Paperback)
Assault On Atlantis is the fifth book in the series and it is just as good as the first four. Millions are dead and still could die as radioactive gas moves across Russia, towards Europe, while a huge hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger and bigger. Dane has to find a way to repair the atmosphere and he has to do it with Shadow technology. Otherwise his Earth, a long with others, will fall to the Shadows.
Can our Earth survive with help from the past? Or will we get help from another Earth which is already doomed but wishes to lash back at the enemy? Amelia Earhart, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Robert Frost and George Armstrong Custer will all have their parts to play in this struggle.

Not Really A Journey to Atlantis,

The first four books occur in one timeline primarily and are focused on a single threat being made to the world and how to defend against it. These books are probably the easiest to follow and really build up the characters.
The last two books deal with how to defeat the threat being made. These books have two or even three stories going at once and are a bit confusing at times. I think the biggest issues is that sometimes the concurrent stories are given to much precedence in comparison with the main story. There is great detail given to some aspect of these stories that could be better used progressing the main story line. I found the ending to the entire conflict to be a little short. It's pretty clear what happens to most of the main characters but nothing is really mentioned about the conflict as a whole other than it is finished. The series as a whole is quite interesting though. There wasn't as much in respect to Atlantis as I figured there would be when I started the series but it still works. If you like a story that takes place over different times, deals with places like the Bermuda Triangle and the Nazca Lines, and maybe even takes you to other worlds then this is a series that would probably interest you.

I have read the other four books in this series and I generally liked them, but this book is horrible. The back story with custer is very booring and I have skipped entire sections of it. Fortunatly this book is not very long. I hope bok six is better.

Not too bad...but not the best,
This review is from: Assault on Atlantis (Paperback)
Well...after reading all the previous novels and anxiously awaiting the release of this book, i was really enthused until i sat down and read it. Or at least tried to...it actually took me a couple of months to finally finish it. Let me just say that the plot was pretty annoying when it came to trying to remember all the character names. Plus, the plot of the Battle for Little Big Horn was way to long and hard to get through because it was too descriptive and didnt get to the point fast enough. Although i do have to admit that the book took long for me to read because of how busy i have been.Anyways, i was disappointed on the book overall...it seemed pretty weird, as if Greg lost his enthusiam for writing the novel. It didnt have nearly as much jaw dropping events like the ones in the previous novels. The first fourth and last fourth of the book were the most interesting and thrilling. Because of that i am going to read the next novel "Battle for Atlantis" so i can finally know the fate and ending of the saga. I am a devoted fan and will continue to read other books of Greg's but HOPEFULLY the next novel will be better than this one.

I've Been Hooked ...,

This review is from: Assault on Atlantis (Paperback)
... but I was hoping for more plot advancement in this latest of the "Atlantis" series of novels. The overall impression this novel left me with is best described with a simple phrase: It's a warm-up to a finale of sorts. At the beginning and the end of the novel, you have the plot advancment, but in the thick middle it focuses mostly on the Battle of the Little Bighorn (aka Custer's Last Stand). So the 296-page novel had maybe 50 pages of actual plot advancement, with the rest serving as a look into the minds and actions of key players in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The 50 pages of advancement are quite interesting, however (that's why I was hoping for more). It appears the reader will have to wait for Mr. Donegan's (yes, a pen name, but the author's real name escapes me for the moment ) next novel in the series ("Battle for Atlantis"), which comes out in February 2004. It appears to promise significant advancement in the storyline, and perhaps a final resolution. In conclusion, I am hooked on the "Atlantis" series, but now I want answers. "Assault on Atlantis" earns a conditional recommendation from me - if you're an "Atlantis" series reader, pick it up, but do so knowing that, IMO, plot advancement is limited and that the novel appears to be a big build-up to a finale of sorts in the next novel.

a bit weaker than the other novels,

We have all been waiting for this novel to be launched. And it proves to be a novel that again shows Bob Meyer's tremendous writing skills, his expertise in creating suspense, and his careful historic research. All this combined results in another great book in the series. The best is the Custer-plot. It is really convincing and exciting. But I think the Earhart/Dane plot is just a little bit slow this time and cannot catch up with the story of Custer's defeat. But go ahead and read this book. It is very good. But make sure you have read the other novels of the series first.

Custer's Last Stand and A Science Thriller?,
This review is from: Assault on Atlantis (Kindle Edition)
I've been loving the combination of an old battle-- a last stand-- and a modern science thriller, but this one takes the cake. Going between the current storyline of Earth being threatened and Custer's last stand, this book kicked ass.
Terry Brooks cover quote pretty much covers it. I'm not quite sure what genre to put this series in: science fiction? Thriller? Historical fiction? Perhaps all of the above mixed together. I'd read the original Atlantis in paperback after reading Doherty's THE ROCK which was also a book that defied genre. Sort of a Michael Crichton, X-Files type of story. If you want something different, I recommend Doherty (Mayer)

I've read many of Bob Mayer's books before and enjoyed them. I am half way through the Gate series and it's a good read BUT the proof reading is non-existent and it effects the readability of the text greatly in some places. I don't know if it's Mr. mayer's, fault or Amazon's bit it's not acceptable. It's so bad on occasions that it takes 3-4 read throughs to understand what's actually being written. I don't care that this is an ebook format, no-one paying for a book should have to accept that poor level of quality. You certainly wouldn't with a printed copy. Proof read before publishing please!

Story OK, Spelling and Grammar AWFUL,

I have read all the books in the series and each has bad grammar and spelling errors, but this one is as bad as it gets; you literally have to guess at the word that is misspelled; Some have symbols instead of letters; it makes me think that this was outsourced to India or Russia or China. When you think about it, it's digital, the author had to write it on a computer...how could it get so messed up. Robert Doherty, you should be ashamed of yourself and your team for letting this be sold in this condition.
