Finally, an offical release of Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 sees the light of day.

This is a bit expensive, but it is the offical product from Carpetner, sounding better than any of the bootlegs and way better than any of those 'The Music of John Carpenter' discs that featured re-recordings of the director's famed cues.

Do note that the disc is very short, around half an hour. Carpenter admitted to writing this score in about three days. It's spare, minimal, and very fitting for the stark, Rio Bravo update. We have big, fat, warm synths, mid-70s style (the kind you had to warm up) and that constant swishing, chattering percussion that keeps things tense (the stalking of the ice cream truck by the gang, the gang's appearance from nowhere as they descend on the police station). Highlights are the title, of course, and The Windows, which features another big, fat synth line. Some may find it all cheesy, but Carpenter fans will appreciate what the maverick director could do with a low budget and his own wits. You will also find lots of repetition among the many tracks here, as in other early Carpenter scores (Halloween, The Fog), but the cues are effective and an important part of the film.

Highly recommended for Carpenter fans. I doubt it'll be in print for very long, so it's worth picking up.

Finally. The score from the original Assault Soundtrack is available. This is some very very seminal minimalist electronica composed by John Carpenter himself. The mivie itself is fantastic and the soundtrack in itself is very very good. It is surprisingly modern when you consider when it was recorded and also when you read that it took him 3 days only. OK it is somewhat short at below 40 minutes but it is very very consistent. The quality of the recording is first-rate and the sound is not dated at all with very profound bass coming out. It is minimalist electronic music that antedates a lot of stuff that would become popular much later on.

The ambitious student film Dark Star by John Carpenter was a nice calling card but Assault On Precinct 13 was his first real film and it was a good one.I watched this and Halloween all the time when we first got cable and HBO back in the late 70`s and the music was a key part of the success of those films.I saw this and snapped it up,it`s a nice little collection of music and showcases the musical chops of Carpenter. If your a fan you have it already,if not, maybe it`s worth checking out.

Very simple but very effective music. I only wish that there was more music here to listen to. But, I think that all the music that was composed for this movie is included. One of Carpenter's best.

Finally re-released properly and available without paying big money for a European import. Short, but sweet, this is one of Carpenter's finest soundtracks. Packaged in a pop-up digipack. Very cool!
