Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-The introduction of Sea mentions early historical incursions such as "the Sea People" attempting to invade Egypt, the Persians trying to conquer Greece, and the violent windstorm that thwarted the Chinese invasion of Japan some 700 years ago. The 12- to 15-page chapters that follow discuss the preparation, action, and results of various invasions of World War I, World War II, and Korea. The first chapter of Sky briefly describes how the Axis and Allies each developed their own paratrooper units. The remaining text discusses some of the more famous battles in which paratroopers took part. In both books, potentially unfamiliar terms are defined in the text. Half- and full-page vintage photos are scattered throughout. Captions describe them, but are not useful as supplemental information. The brevity of these titles makes them introductory material exclusively. Some of the text is a little too glib, resulting in the loss of just how serious, devastating, and costly in human lives the engagements really were. The endpapers in both titles contain maps of the regions discussed in the texts. Battle sites are highlighted and major ones are magnified. Even with the minor problems, these selections are adequate purchases.

Students grades 5-8 will enjoy this interesting, informative book. The text is engaging, and the pictures illustrate the complexities, emotions, and historical figures important in World War II. End paper maps help show where the offences took place. It is interesting to see the history of paratroopers and just how large of an inpact this new military initiative had on the war.
