5.0 out of 5 stars This one's really under-rated, March 15, 2009
This is a real spear! I do not recommend storing this fully assembled.

The head alone is a large double-edge dagger, and has an edge suitable for shaving.

The only negative I can think of is the handle didn't fit the tapered socket well, and required a fair amount of fitting and rasp-filing before the head would properly seat on the handle. Also, the head is made from one piece of sheet steel, and simply rolled into a cone-shaped socket for the attachment point. It looks cheap, but it works very well.

I was asked to find a spear as a visual aid for Sunday school at Easter, so I bought this. It worked fine, but the extremely sharp edge always worried me around kids. So, I dismounted the head and made a glass display case for the head. So, this became our local "spear of destiny" rather than a utility weapon.

I haven't actually thrown it, as I don't have anything that will safely catch a sharpened object this big. As a weapon, it will produce a very large wound and profuse hemorrhaging as the originals did. It has two threats: it's an effective stabbing weapon, but will also deliver a deep, nasty slash from the keen edge on both sides. Use caution if you buy this, especially if children are about.

I highly recommend this for either display or applications where a spear would be useful. This one's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great spear for martial arts training and hand held hunting., June 9, 2008
By
This is an excellent hunting spear to be used in hand only. I doubt that it would throw well and doesn't have enough mass for deep penetration. The blade is razor sharp and it takes a lot of effort to dull it. The spear is very well balanced and light weight.

My purposes for this weapon is for realistic martial arts training. The weight, balance and flow of this weapon is great for combat. You will have too dull the edge to train with it. The weapon can easily, accidentilly, cut you to the bone.

5.0 out of 5 stars I felt like a real Zulu! ; ), April 2, 2010

This review is from: Assegai w/Long Shaft, American Ash Wood Handle (Electronics)
Well this was the first spear I purchased, I did a good amount of internet research to find one that I liked. I really wanted a Zulu spear because I like how they look and their historical use has proved (in my opinion) that they are the best spears ever made. When I first got it, the only problem I really had was the shaft didn't fit on really well, it was too tight as all the other reviews have mentioned. I pretty much pushed it down as good as I could and went with that. Now it does use two screws to hold it in. Zulu's traditionally didn't have screws, so obviously if your wanting a truly authentic assegai, this isn't it. But, if your wanting something functional, as well as built with the assegai style, then this is definitly it. Now I put in a pretty good amount of aggresssion and rough play into this. I live out in the woods, so I had tons of room to swing it and throw it.

Initially I swung it around pretty well, and pierced some trees with it and threw it around. I have to say the actual spear tip is really well made. I threw this puppy pretty hard several times, and I even accidentally threw it full fledge into rocks, and the spear point was still pretty sharp. I threw it into trees and only threw it lightly, but it stuck in there pretty well, that I had to put in some good effort to pull it out. (just like in the movies) I then noticed a pack of turkey and I followed them into the woods with this, had quite a bit of an adventure too. I used the spear pretty roughly in the woods, using it as a hiking stick, and whacking things with it. I never killed the turkey, but after rough housing with this thing for a few hours I immediately felt a close bond to it. I rate it 5 stars, and I definitly felt well equipped to take on a cougar with this bad boy.
