5.0 out of 5 stars This one's really under-rated, March 15, 2009
This is a real spear! I do not recommend storing this fully assembled.

The head alone is a large double-edge dagger, and has an edge suitable for shaving.

The only negative I can think of is the handle didn't fit the tapered socket well, and required a fair amount of fitting and rasp-filing before the head would properly seat on the handle. Also, the head is made from one piece of sheet steel, and simply rolled into a cone-shaped socket for the attachment point. It looks cheap, but it works very well.

I was asked to find a spear as a visual aid for Sunday school at Easter, so I bought this. It worked fine, but the extremely sharp edge always worried me around kids. So, I dismounted the head and made a glass display case for the head. So, this became our local "spear of destiny" rather than a utility weapon.

I haven't actually thrown it, as I don't have anything that will safely catch a sharpened object this big. As a weapon, it will produce a very large wound and profuse hemorrhaging as the originals did. It has two threats: it's an effective stabbing weapon, but will also deliver a deep, nasty slash from the keen edge on both sides. Use caution if you buy this, especially if children are about.

I highly recommend this for either display or applications where a spear would be useful. This one's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great spear for martial arts training and hand held hunting., June 9, 2008
By
This is an excellent hunting spear to be used in hand only. I doubt that it would throw well and doesn't have enough mass for deep penetration. The blade is razor sharp and it takes a lot of effort to dull it. The spear is very well balanced and light weight.

My purposes for this weapon is for realistic martial arts training. The weight, balance and flow of this weapon is great for combat. You will have too dull the edge to train with it. The weapon can easily, accidentilly, cut you to the bone.

5.0 out of 5 stars I felt like a real Zulu! ; ), April 2, 2010

This review is from: Assegai w/Long Shaft, American Ash Wood Handle (Electronics)
Well this was the first spear I purchased, I did a good amount of internet research to find one that I liked. I really wanted a Zulu spear because I like how they look and their historical use has proved (in my opinion) that they are the best spears ever made. When I first got it, the only problem I really had was the shaft didn't fit on really well, it was too tight as all the other reviews have mentioned. I pretty much pushed it down as good as I could and went with that. Now it does use two screws to hold it in. Zulu's traditionally didn't have screws, so obviously if your wanting a truly authentic assegai, this isn't it. But, if your wanting something functional, as well as built with the assegai style, then this is definitly it. Now I put in a pretty good amount of aggresssion and rough play into this. I live out in the woods, so I had tons of room to swing it and throw it.

Initially I swung it around pretty well, and pierced some trees with it and threw it around. I have to say the actual spear tip is really well made. I threw this puppy pretty hard several times, and I even accidentally threw it full fledge into rocks, and the spear point was still pretty sharp. I threw it into trees and only threw it lightly, but it stuck in there pretty well, that I had to put in some good effort to pull it out. (just like in the movies) I then noticed a pack of turkey and I followed them into the woods with this, had quite a bit of an adventure too. I used the spear pretty roughly in the woods, using it as a hiking stick, and whacking things with it. I never killed the turkey, but after rough housing with this thing for a few hours I immediately felt a close bond to it. I rate it 5 stars, and I definitly felt well equipped to take on a cougar with this bad boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, needs finish, March 11, 2011

The blade is authentic; at least as far as I can judge without testing it out on someone --- someday perhaps.

The shaft is good solid ash wood. Ash is an excellent choice and also very authentic.

There is one failing here. The wood should have been finished. Finished wood doubles the life by providing a surface toughness and strength all its own. I made the mistake of screwing in the blade before finishing it; that will be a summer project.

I bought this for home defense in addition to handguns. Contrary to police lore, a handgun is not the best weapon to have in close quarters, especially in the days when every hoodlum has a bullit-proof vest; cops too, I might add. Kevlar is plastic and will stop most rounds. Let's try that on a 4" blade --- ouch! At close quarters, modern weapons are a complete failure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty, September 13, 2010
This review is from: Assegai w/Long Shaft, American Ash Wood Handle (Electronics)
This spear is superb. The spear head is larger than I had anticipated, which is definitely a plus, and I love the American Ash shaft (super sturdy). Yes, assembly is required, and yes, the shaft must be sanded a bit in order to fit the head on. In my opinion, this makes it all the more personal; it makes for a bit of, say, quality time with your weapon. Be wary, for it is sharp. It pierces straight through a water-filled milk jug effortlessly (and a bed mattress, sheets and all. Whoopsies). I have yet to throw it, and I am certain that it will perform well in that aspect. Overall, Cold Steel has made an excellent item, one worthy for both display and serious use.

I am very pleased with the spear, the spear head is larger then i expected and very sharp. After a few adjustments it fit the shaft very well. I haven't tried using it yet but i plan to soon. It's a great spear for the money you pay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beast of a weapon!, November 11, 2010

This review is from: Assegai w/Long Shaft, American Ash Wood Handle (Electronics)
This spear is absolutely beautiful! The ash handle is sturdy, straight, and together with the spearhead towers to about 6'8. The spearhead thick, heavy, and sharp. It's a quality weapon, not some cheap piece of junk. Buyer beware, this is a weapon, NOT a toy. This item would be great for historical reenactments, provided nobody plans on actually lunging it at anybody. The design is generic enough that it can pass for a spear from several cultures and periods. When you cradle this baby in your hands you'll feel like you're in a Homeric epic or aboard a Viking ship out for pillage and plunder! Reds Gear provided great customer service with this item, and I look forward to doing business with them again in the near future. This piece is a great gift for any SCA,LARP,or historical weapons enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for stabbing., July 9, 2010

People of America: Don't think you don't need a spear just because you live in the information age. Don't be the least bit embarrassed that you're using a 21st century device to purchase a prehistoric-era weapon. If you're not familiar with spears and how they work, don't worry. This item doesn't include any instruction manual, but just watch the movie "300" and you'll get the idea. Basically, you use it to stab things, though I don't recommend using it to stab people, unless of course they're Persians trying to conquer you. Bring it on the bus or subway and I guarantee that seats will open for you! I've found that people tend to give me a wide berth when I carry this around town.

When I first opened it, I was disappointed. I had expected some hand-forged artifact that looked 'authentically African'. It's made of stamped steel, and looks like it cost about three dollars to make.

But then I realized that it was indeed a functional spear. It's probably what they sell in Africa these days.

On the whole, it isn't fancy, but it will do. And the price was right.

It should come with some sort of sheath.
