Awesome new band - not rock, punk, or anything like it. I would say alternative, but more definitely emo. a quiet emo version. very interesting, I immediately feel in love with it - unique vocals, sounds, instruments. dont buy if you are only into mainstream! if you truly enjoy real music - I HIGHLY recommend.

Unexpected., June 17, 2011

I picked this up at a going-out-of-business CD store for $1 a couple years ago. That is not the way one should come across something like this. It changed the way I look at myself. It doesn't exactly have the makings of a "classic" album; that is, there are no anthems or true ballads, and it's not the kind of thing that would get that kind of "classic" attention anyway. However, all the songs are tight yet loose and overflowing, and they sound similar but not in a way that you couldn't tell them apart. It's not the kind of music that one gets tired of right away anyway; the sound might be described as ethereal, introspective, emo, gentle, wet, heavy, light, innocent, and wise. The Wikipedia article for the band compares the singer's voice to that of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and the singer from Sigur Ros. That's probably about right. I haven't listened much to Pompeii's next album "Nothing Happens for a Reason" yet, but for now I am content to listen to this amidst everything else, and recommend it to anyone willing to listen. Get this album, no matter how you manage to do so.

this is pompeii's incredible debut release and they have already mastered the art of simplicity in music that can genuinely move a person. this is one of my favorite albums released in the last few years.
