Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is an exceptional text. It is, without exception, the most useful and most user-friendly assessment text I have found. In fact, no other assessment text I have seen compares to the Pierangelo/Giuliani text. It is truly a practical approach to an otherwise complex topic.”

- Nancy Burton, Concord University

“The methodology of structuring the text to mirror the special education process is sound teaching practice for undergraduate students.”

- Shirley Fortney, West Chester University

“The authors cover more assessment-related topics than I’ve found are covered in similar texts.”

- Rho Hudson, Nevada State College

From the Back Cover

Taking a uniquely practical approach to the topic of assessment in special education, the authors organize the material into a “real-world story” by having each part and chapter of the text reflect the linear chronology of the assessment process used in schools.

What’s New to the Third Edition?

  • New chapter on response to intervention (RTI) that stresses the increasing importance of multitiered assessment in today’s classrooms (Chapter 17)
  • New information on functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) and behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) (Chapter 11)
  • New information on the various types of speech and language disorders often seen by teachers of special education (Chapter 13)
  • More comprehensive approach to understanding the eligibility requirements necessary for a diagnosis to be made (Chapter 16)
  • Updated and revised content for the discussed areas of disability, including learning disabilities, speech and language disorders, mental retardation or intellectual disabilities, and emotional disturbance

“This is an exceptional text. It is the most useful and most user-friendly assessment text I have found. In fact, no other assessment text I have seen compares to the Pierangelo/Giuliani text. It is truly a practical approach to an otherwise complex topic.”

–Nancy Burton, Concord University

“The methodology of structuring the text to mirror the special education process is a sound teaching practice for undergraduate students.”

–Shirley Fortney, Virginia Wesleyan College

This is a book I had to have as a SPED teacher. My original with all my notes blew out of a box as we were moving, but I needed it to help with assessments as a teacher. This is a tough subject, but the book explains everything well.

The text is well thought out, and easy to read. Chocker block full of
definitions, concepts, and the chapters are short in length. The author
is one of the most credible and experienced experts on assessing (and
planning)for teaching/developing special needs learners. Therefore, Every reader will benefit.

I had to buy this book for a grad school class and am always skeptical about required books. This book has actually been very helpful for the course and the material covered is something that will remain useful for me in my career as a special educator. Amazon also had it for the cheapest price I could find and it arrived quickly.

Needed this for grad school. The book was way cheaper than the bookstore. Can be substituted for the 4th Edition. The chapters are in different order, but all have the same information (I got an A in the class.)
