Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This broad, thorough competency-based overview of appraisal procedures provides a practical guide to responsible test use; gives suggestions on how to "do" appraisals; and features examples, case studies, and guidelines demonstrating testing in different environments with different populations -- all based on ethical standards and contemporary theory. It covers topics essential for students to become responsible users of assessment -- test selection, administration, and reporting --and to help them prepare for licensing and certification examinations. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

New to this edition:

  • Chapter 1, Introduction to Assessment, provides more coverage of the purpose for and process of assessment.
  • Chapter 2, Methods and Sources of Assessment Information–a new chapter–includes extensive information about interviews, tests, and observation, as well as information about the importance of using collateral sources in assessment.
  • The text provides more than 25 sample assessments, including WISC-IV sample tests results, a Stanford 10 sample report, and an MMPI-2 Profile.

Bound in each new copy of the book, the Exercises in Assessment CD gives readers the opportunity to apply chapter content to real counseling situations.  Exercises cover topics such as interpreting test scores, instrument evaluation, and assessment, using specific inventories such as the WISC-IV and MMPI-2.

1.0 out of 5 stars Many critical typos, September 23, 2006
By

(REAL NAME)
This book is not for people who do not understand statistics because there are typos in the book on important things such as definitions, answers to stats formulas, and in addition, the associated on-line grading chapter questions. Page 39 is just one example. The explanation of a Z-score has a typo. Below that, the example formula of a T-score is incorrect. Trying to figure this stuff out has been beyond frustrating. I do not recommend this book until they fix the published errors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back edition saves $, July 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text was required for a course I took on appraisal and assessment procedures. I decided to buy the 5th edition because it was much, much cheaper than the current edition (which I believe is the 7th). The fifth edition shares most of the same information as the newest edition (i did a comparison of the two when I purchased, then returned the most recent text from the school book store). The chapters aren't in the same order, but unless you're being tested on the text book verbatim, it's not necessary to spend the extra cash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand Text on Appraisal, August 7, 2001
By
I purchased a copy of Appraisal Procedures for Counselors and Helping Professionals by Robert J. Drummond in order to review for the National Counselor Exam. It had been a number of years since I had taken a class in appraisal and I felt that I needed to brush up on the terms and basic principles. I found this book to be very helpful. The material is presented in an easy to understand format. I was worried about the appraisal section on the NCE. After reviewing this book, I felt much more confidnet about being successful on the appraisal section of the test. I recently took the NCE and passed. And, I actually did ok on the appraisal questions. I would recommend this book as an excellent review.
