Disappointing, April 15, 2010
This review is from: (XX) Assisted-Opening Smith & Wesson Black Ops SWAT Knife - Serrated + Fine-Edge Combo Blade - Lifet (Misc.)
I have owned many "service" knives in my time. These knives only job in life is to open boxes, letters, cut rope, seat belts, etc. I do not think that, with the notable exceptions of courthouses and airports, I have been without a knife on my person since the age of 16, this has to be by far the worst thought out knife ever. I purchased this knife due mainly on price and the fact that the belt clip was located on the butt of the knife (end without the blade.) I carry my knives in my rear pocket and I prefer this layout due the fact that when I get the knife out it naturally is in the position to be "flicked" open blade out, handle in the correct position for cutting.
This knife is a biter. Due to a overactive assist opening device, the lock must always be engaged. Should one try and carry in the described position above without the lock one of two things WILL happen:1) You will cut you ass, or 2) you will cut you hand trying to get the knife out of you pocket. The spring on the assist is so strong that I have actually found the knife fully open in my back pocket on one occasion and fully open in my front pocket on two occasions, YIKES!. While I understand that if there is a safety on something it is meant to be used, this safety is more of a hindrance that a help. While in the open position the safety can fall into a "on" position and will cause all sorts of issue when you try and close the knife, especially if you are trying to close it one handed. It will close to a point, then stop jammed by the safety at which point it will spring back open when you release pressure. More importantly the safety can fall into the OFF position while in your pocket, hence the three times I have cut myself with this knife, finding open when it should have been closed and locked.
This knife has some neat features such as the textured grip, assisted opening, 3/4 blood groove, and the ability to keep an edge with all sorts of pushment thrown at it. However, I think that Smith and Wesson would be better off, removing the assist and just offering this knife with the traditional assist nub and locking features.
