The product very accurate did everything I tested for.

I particularly like the fact that you can vary the amount of load and have a meter to see the actual load that is applied.

Right now there are at least seven different brands of these very similar 500 amp units offered on Amazon, and Harbor Freight has one too. They all appear to be nearly identical except for the paint color and graphics. Prices range from around $50 to $160.

There do appear to be minor differences, though. If you look carefully at the photos you can see that two of the models sold on Amazon have small wires running alongside the positive and negative cables between the battery terminal clamps and the unit. In applications like this, where large currents are flowing, this is typically done so that the volt meter can accurately read the voltage at the clamps through the smaller wires, so the voltage drop through the large cables does not affect the accuracy of the voltage reading. This would be a worthwhile feature, and the funny thing is that the cheapest one sold here on Amazon has it, along with the most expensive one. The others, including the one I'm reviewing here and the HF model, do not have the extra wires.

I first bought a Sun VAT-40 for my shop in 1977, which was the "gold standard" of testers like this for many years. I was also a Sr Tech Trainer for one of the Japanese auto companies, and was later in charge of their special tools and diagnostic equipment program. I did not, of course, expect this unit to perform at the same level as more expensive professional equipment, but at some point if the functionality and accuracy are too bad then the tester is not usable. If the voltage reading, for example, is way off then you may either fail good batteries or keep those that should be replaced.

My experience with this unit is about the same as some of the other reviewers of the similar testers sold here on Amazon.

1. Item is in fact made in China (says so on the box).
2. This item is used when there is a question as to whether the battery is bad. I was confronted with a situation during the summer where my wife's car was left in the garage for one week without being started, and then click click..it would not start. I jumpstarted it using my jumper cables, let it warm up to normal engine temperature, drove it around in the neighborhood for a few minutes and parked it back in the garage. After 24 hours, it clicked clicked again, with the engine not turning. Voltage of the battery was at about 10 volts. I then charged it fully with a Tender Plus which with its steady green light, confirmed by my multimeter, told me that the battery was fully charged. 13.40 volt or thereabouts.
I used the Associated Carbon pile by following directions. You must make sure that the battery is fully charged in order to make a proper determination. I also watched a Youtube video to ensure that my understanding of the instructions are correct. This thing can cause a fire if you are not careful. Sure enough, the needle swang to less than 9 volt during the tests, and I did this three times (1st time 100 cca, 2nd and third time at 250 cca with a 540cca battery). Note that the CCA scale is at the very bottom of the amperage scale on the left. This tester, on the right scale (voltage scale), will let you know if the battery can be tested "ok to test" or needs more charging. You have to wait at least 2 minutes to let the carbon pile cool between the three tests.
I concluded that my battery was bad, because the voltage needle on the voltage scale swung below 9 volts.

I happen to be a certified mechanic so you will need
to know how to read the meter.

The Carbon Pile Load Tester works as described. I particularly like the fact that you can vary the amount of load and have a meter to see the actual load that is applied.

I got the big model because I have heavy equipment batteries. For the first time we can sort out the difference between a low battery and a bad battery. Highly recommended.
