5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and valuable
This book was excellent for perspective on Greek and Hebrew thought and it's outworking in Western Society. The author has managed to communicate in a very clear and simple way. Enlightening and challenging.

2.0 out of 5 stars Perpetuates Deeply Flawed Thinking
As a graduate of Seattle Pacific University, I was interested in reading some of Dr. Overman's work as he is an alumnus and currently serves as adjunct faculty there.

Sadly, this book is not worth your time.

The premise that Western thought is derived from both Greek and Hebrew philosophy is certainly worth investigating. But instead of tracing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing, July 21, 2003

This review is from: Assumptions That Affect Our Lives (Paperback)
This book can change your life. It explores the way people think and why people believe the way they believe. Hebrew vs Greek philosophy, etc. I realize now that I had been reading scripture from the wrong mindset...and now that I can relate a little better to a Hebrew mindset, many truths are being revealed to me. I highly recommend that any Christian who is ready to make a breakthrough spiritually read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Assumptions That Affect Our Lives, January 2, 2009

My husband and I as well as 22 people from our church all read this book and study workbook that accompanied this title. We had a 10 week workshop and discussion session examining the content thoroughly. Everyone enjoyed these workshops immmensly. We all found that the book contained important facts that helped us understand our own world view and how others world views are shaped. I would highly recommend all of these materials, the book, workbook and study as would all of those who shared this workshop. We have purchased several copies for friends and family members and it has helped generate great discussions and sharing. Christian Overman is a gifted presenter of the facts surrounding this topic and we hope to enjoy more of what he writes on world views and a Christian world view in particular. We look forward to "Gods Pleasure at Work," coming in March 2009.

4.0 out of 5 stars HOW MUCH GREECE IS IN YOUR HAIR?, January 1, 2009
By
This book is not just to be read - it is to be applied to every day life and thought. It's not for people who are not prepared to change centuries of Greek-based thought and behaviour patterns but it is for folk who want to get back to radical Biblical thought rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures. Over the years both me and my students have been enriched and challenged.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Must Buy!, January 1, 2009

"Assumptions that Affect our Lives" is a must read for any Christian who wants to be in the know about world view issues. Too often, Christians have a knee-jerk reaction to the issues of our day and fail to think through our world view and foundational beliefs. Dr. Overman has done a great service to the Christian church by helping us to think in a biblical manner. To anyone who wants to have a consistent, biblical world view, this book is an excellent place to start. As a Christian apologist with twenty years experience in defending the faith, I cannot recommend this book more highly. Ar Dr. Overman shows us, our world views determine our values, beliefs, and behavior. Do you have a consistent world view? Read this book and find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand how culture influences your decisions, January 5, 2009
If you've ever asked the question "Why can't we just all get along?", then this book is a must read. We all make decisions every day that are the product of our worldview and patterns of thinking. Christian Overman does a masterful job of explaining how that happens, and specifically how Greek and Hebrew worldviews influence how we think. As we face ever-increasing tension throughout the world in a clash of cultures, whether it be Communist, Islamic, Socialist, Capitalist, Hebrew or Greek in nature, it's important to understand that the fundamental viewpoints we hold make "just getting along" an improbable, if not impossible, scenario. God didn't create the world that way. Assumptions that Affect Our Lives is as enlightening as it is challenging. The author provides excellent sources as well as scholarly treatment of the subject. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Challenge to Postmodern Assumptions, January 2, 2009
By
Dr. Overman's comparative treatment of the ancient Greek and Hebraic worldviews provides a powerful reference point and perspective for Christians today who find themselves confronted by our modern-postmodern culture. He develops a well-researched, persuasive case to discredit the notion that there is no such thing as absolute truth.

I valued highly the clarity of this book! It helped me put into perspective the beliefs I have carried with me from childhood and given me the capability of sorting through them to decide which were based on the Sciptures and which were simply beliefs handed down through the ages, beliefs that I could let go of. I had not thought of my belief system as a "worldview" until reading this book. I now look at my world with eyes wide open, often questioning my reasoning to make sure it is in line with God's worldview. It has also helped me gain understanding as to why my children and children of generations younger than mine have a different view of the world than I do.
