William M. Warda was born in Iran; he arrived in the United States to further his education and has lived there since. He has done extensive Research about the history of the ancient Assyrians after the fall of Nineveh, and about the history of the Christian Assyrians. He has written dozens of articles about these two subjects that have been published in the Assyrian publications, and on the Internet. In 2003 he established the www.christiansofiraq.com website, to bring to the attention of the world, the persecution of the Christians of Iraq by the Islamist. Warda has served as the president and member of the board of directors of the Assyrian American Association of Southern California.
History books provide no information about what happened to the ancient Assyrians after their 612 BC defeat by the Babylonians and the Medians. This lack of information has led to the erroneous assumption that Assyrians were defeated into extinction. The first part of the "Assyrians Beyond the fall of Nineveh" is devoted to debunking the assumption that the ancient Assyrians ceased to exist after their famous defeat. It provides evidences to support the Christian Assyrians claim that they are the descendants of the ancient Assyrians. It the refute false statements by writers such as John Joseph who have claimed that they had never identified themselves as Assyrians before the 19th century.
William Warda presents evidences to prove that Christian Assyrian writers, such as the fourth century Mar Ephraim, Mar Narsai, and others in later centuries have identified their people as Assyrians. The rest of the book is devoted to narrating the history of the Christian Assyrians during the periods when people of different nationalities ruled their homeland. Finally, it describes the persecutions they suffered in later centuries, which have caused their dispersion into various countries of the world. This is a good book for people who want to find out what happened to the ancient Assyrians, and are curious about the history and identity of the Modern Assyrians.

I am somewhat biased in that I know the author. None the less I will say that the information in the book is top notch. I do have some criticism with the lay out and presentation. The first half of the book deals with proving that the modern Assyrians are descendants of the Ancient Assyrians. Their sovereignty may have been lost but they continued to remain on their land. This fact has been ignored and the viewpoint shunned. Critics say that Christian Iraqis bought into this after Achaeologist named Laynard posited the suggestion that the two were the same. Mr.Warda does an ample job discussing historical documents showing that the people living in Mesopotamia were in fact referred to as Assyrians. The sources are Greek, Christians and Arab. More over the similarity of motifs between Christian and Pagan Assyrian work is well noted and convincing. Some of the reason behind the cover up stem from an old testament prophecy via Nachum which states that Assyria will be destroyed. The Assyrians also got a lot bad press from the Bible. The Assyrians themselves upon becoming Christian did try to conceal their past.
The author does delve into the Assyrians modern history quite well. Beginning with the conversion by Addai he goes through the whole course of history raising the highpoints of their contributions and good times and showing the reader what their life was like. The history give a broad overview something which a new comer to Assyrian history will find valuable. To someone of more knowledge they may find themselves craving a more in-depth approach. the Assyrians when given the chance have a lot to offer but due to what the author deems as Islamic fundamentalism they have been persecuted. In this instance he is right.Read more ›

I have always been expecting a thoroughly researched book about the fate of the Assyrians after the fall of Nineveh and the Assyrian Empire. This book fulfills that expectation and goes even beyond that to the refuting of the misconceptions and prejudices against the existence of Assyrians today. Furthermore, it gives all the details in precise dates and places where and how the many names by which Assyrians came to be known over the ages were all concocted. It is a must have book in any Assyrian's home or library, and in fact every person who is interested in history should have a copy of it.

This is a well researched book. I enjoyed reading it. It picks up where most historians had stopped. The Assyrian Empire is well known to the readers of the Old Testament and the students of history. It began as a small country located in Northern Mesopotamia, known today as northern Iraq. Later empires such as Persian, and Roman, owed much to the Assyrian Empire's military and administrative legacy. However, after their 612 BC defeat by the Babylonians and the Medians there is no mention of what happened to the Assyrians in the history books. "Assyrians beyond the Fall of Nineveh," provides irrefutable historical and archaeological evidences to prove that ancient Assyrians survived their defeat and their descendants continued into the Christian era and converted into Christianity. This book proves that some elements of the ancient Assyrian culture and religion have survived, among the Christian Assyrians, since the early centuries of Christianity. For example some of the contemporary Assyrian surname such as Samano, Adamo, Khamo and Khano can be traced back to the names of the ancient Assyrian kings who ruled four thousand years ago. The 2nd part of the book follows the history of the Christian Assyrians during the rule of other nations: such as the Persians, Greeks, Parthians, Sassanians, Arabs and others who conquered their homeland.
