Book Description

June 1, 1979
Caesar has plans to build a luxury holiday complex, the Mansion of the Gods, for Roman holidaymakers, just next to the Gaulish village. However, through the cunning plans of Asterix, things do not turn out quite as the Romans had hoped.

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Asterix or Asterix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by Rene Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2008, 33 comic books in the series have been released.
The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In many cases, this leads them to travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village. For much of the history of the series (Volumes 4 through 29), settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.
The Asterix series is one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries.
The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into 11 films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a theme park near Paris, Parc Asterix, is themed around the series. To date, 325 million copies of 33 Asterix books have been sold around the world making co-creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo France's bestselling authors abroad.

5.0 out of 5 stars asterix and the mansions of the gods: wha the people thought, December 19, 1999
This is one of my favourate ASTERIX books with many laughs along the way, ideal for childrean and a perfect christmas present! Kids are bound to love it! We find out that Ceasar and his young architect (squarontheypotenus) are planning to build a new city surrounding asterixs' peaceful village. So asterix and his trusty freind obelix decide that something has to be done, so with a bit of magic along the way the story unveals, giving the romans a headache, the gauls some fun and us well a good laugh!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Comic Award, July 10, 2008
I've been reading Asterix since I was a child, and I've never read a better comic. They're clever, silly and have great twists on words. I've picked up bits of history, Latin and enlarged my vocabulary without meaning to. These comics don't get old, even when read and reread. Now my kids and their friends read my Asterix collection and they're as absorbed as my friends and I were. The "Mansions of the Gods" is one of my top 3 picks, along with "Asterix and the Legionnary" and "Asterix and Cleopatra." Make sure to buy the Asterix written by Goscinny and illustrated by Uderzo. After Goscinny died, Uderzo continued both writing and illustrating these comics and they aren't as clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Asterix Adventures, May 20, 2000

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of the best Asterix adventures, with a very inventive plot, hilarious one-liners. Cacofonix steals the show at the end of the book, with the reactions from the residents of the Mansion of the Gods funny beyond words.
