Not in the usual comic format,
This review is from: Asterix and the Vikings: The Book of the Film (Asterix (Orion Paperback)) (Paperback)
I enjoyed the earlier Asterix comics, but this one is not the same. It is a storybook format and thus lacks the detailed drawings and the expressions that made the earlier ones just so good.

Asterix and the Vikings,
This review is from: Asterix and the Vikings: The Book of the Film (Asterix (Orion Paperback)) (Paperback)
`Asterix and the Vikings' is not your traditional Asterix book, although it still features our heroes and their adventures. Rather than being a comic strip like the rest of the series, this is a book of the film which utilises blocks of written text telling the story alongside stills from the film. This book (and the film) is based upon `Asterix and the Normans' and if you know that book then the story will already be familiar to you. The animation is quite attractive to look at, but sadly there seems to be minimal connect between what is in the text and the pictures they have chosen to face it. The pictures obviously do relate to the overall story but often not at the right point in the plot. Saying that, this has made me want to find the DVD of the film and check it out as the artwork looks great. There is also an additional 16 pages at the end which explains how the film came to be made and shows the character development and how Uderzo corrected the proofs so the characters were animated properly. This isn't especially relevant to the story, but makes for fairly interesting reading never the less. If you are a huge fan of Asterix then you will need to add this to your collection at some point, but if you are new to Asterix or haven't read many of the other books I would suggest you track down some of the more conventional Asterix titles first before you come to this. It is good, but not great.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page. |
