5.0 out of 5 stars Asteroids is necessary if you want to be a true Atari collector, August 5, 2009
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Asteroids (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
And even if your not a collector, Asteroids is a great game. When I got it for the Atari 2600 a few weeks ago, I fell in love with it. It had plenty of difficulties, and different power ups/game modes that will satisfy your Asteroid-destroying fix.

For those who say this game is easy, is correct... if you don't change the game mode. Game mode 1 is easy, but other game modes will test your skills, especially the ones with UFO's and Satellites. There's also modes that change your power up, Power ups include a "Shield" which makes you immune to incoming Asteroids for 2 seconds. Another is "Hyperspace" where you appear in another location randomly on the map, and my favorite, the mode with no power ups.

As for the graphics, its not vector based, but its close enough. Also, the Asteroids are colored for some reason, but I don't actually mind this, because they remind me of colored marshmallows, and I love me some Marshmallows.

Honestly, when I play asteroids, I always have some marshmallows to munch on.

As for Asteroids, its a great game... so get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Asteroids., July 1, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Asteroids (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
This is a popular game on the atari. It is one of my favorites too. The purpose is to shoot all of the asteroids and alieen space ships that come and try not to get hit buy bullets or asteroids. The music and sound is catchy and fun to listen too. The graphics r not that good but is is the atari. It is hard to control the ship sometimes but the joystick makes it easy sometimes. It is really fun on multiplayer but u have to take turns like most atari games. This is a fun old popular game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the arcade version, November 6, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Asteroids (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
In 1979, Atari introduced a video game called Asteroids to arcades.

And the world has never been the same since.

Asteroids was so popular, it seemed everyone wanted to play. And especially because it was an Atari game, it only made sense for the company to create a version of Asteroids for its hugely popular home video game system, the Atari 2600.

For those who might not know, what is the object of this game? Simple. You fly a little spaceship around a screen while avoid getting blown to smithereens by tons and tons of asteroids floating around. To help out, you can shoot at the asteroids, which makes smaller asteroids. Then you have to blow away the smaller asteroids to clear the screen and go on to the next screen, where you do it all over again. Every once in a while an alien spaceship will fly by and take a shot at you, but you can blow those up as well.

Sounds simple, and simplistic. It's not, on both counts.

Asteroids was a ton of fun to play, and it was addictive.

When the game was introduced to the Atari 2600, some fans were concerned that it wouldn't be the same. The arcade version of Asteroids was a vector based game, in layman's terms meaning there weren't a lot of filled-in graphics because everything sort of looked as if it had been drawn to be stick figures. Yes, it sounds stupid, but it was what is was (and it worked and was still a great game). The Atari home system didn't allow for vector graphics, so how would the company pull it off?

Simple. They just filled in the spaces with color. Sure, it looked a little different, but the gameplay was the same and the colored asteroids didn't hurt anything.

The arcade version of Asteroids was popular enough to spawn a few sequels, and it was ported to a few other home video game systems, including modern systems.

4.0 out of 5 stars not arcade-perfect but it gets the job done, October 1, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Asteroids (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
Graphics were okay, although people expecting the 2600 to reproduce the vector graphics of the arcade version will be disappointed big time. Sound effects are good with the "heartbeat" background sound and the sound of your ship firing and blowing up asteroids. Control is great. My main gripe is the game is so easy you can just sit in one spot and just rotate around and fire and rack up big points. Otherwise, it's a good game and should be part of any Atari 2600 library.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greats., March 2, 2008

This review is from: Asteroids (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
I own many atari games, as a collector I play dozens of these, and asteroids is one of my favorite 2600 releases, aside from the easy difficulty (which does increase as you play) it is a very solid game by 2600 standards, people who complain about the graphics aren't putting into consideration that it runs off a 4-bit with no RAM.
