Pilots now choose between three varieties of spacecraft, each with unique firepower, shield levels, and maneuverability. Dodging and weaving among the floating obstacles, players progress through 50 levels, demolishing and avoiding comet-like asteroid projectiles, space junk, and species upon species of aggressive alien beings and ships, as well as the classic, garden-variety asteroids.
New weapons and power-ups occasionally float by, providing much-needed boosts of firepower or, say, the ability to temporarily ram enemies or asteroids into oblivion. Extensive multiplayer features include competitive, cooperative, and team play variations.

Don't let the cover of Asteroids Hyper 64 fool you!,

I went to buy a Nintendo 64 game, and Asteroids 64 caught my eye. I looked at the cover, which showed a 3d spaceship blasting asteroids with lasers. On the back, it showed screenshots that apeared to have aimer and you looking through the cockpit. I love these kinds of games, so I bought it. You are flying in a 2d spaceship blasting asteroids with little green balls. In the manual it says somewhere in the game is the 1979 version of Asteroids to play. But take my word for it. It basiclly is the 1979 version.

You can never expect everyone to like every game, heck, I dislike some that are very popular, but here's my two cents. I've heard nothing but people rip this game apart so I just had to check it out for myself. Perhaps it is the fact that I have fond memories of the original, or maybe my expectations were set so low that I wouldn't be disappointed, but I like this game! The reviewer who said "iit might as well be the 1979 version" obviously never played it. This game, like Space Invaders, is a great facelift to an outdated arcade classic. The graphics are just fine, and the powerups add something as well. I also like the different asteroids that break up and come at you. Also, the same reviewer said he couldn't find the original version hidden in this game. I believed that because so often, they make it very hard to unlock or find. However, on my very first time playing this, I got past level 15 (it might have been 12) and before the next level started, the screen said "1979 Asteroids now available". If I had a controller pack, I'm sure I could have saved it and played it later, however, I can get it again. Obviously not a 5 star game what with Perfect Dark abnd what not out there, but I found it well worth the modest price. Again, if you're under the age of 25 and don't really remember the original, you may not enjoy it as much as us 80's kids do! Give it try!
